iPhone apps of the week

Apple's iPhone App Store grows every day with new free and paid offerings. The lion's share of apps (and clearly the most popular) have been games, now with 626 digital time wasters at the time of this writing. I check the App Store almost every day for new stuff--mostly in the free category, but I've also bought my share of iPhone apps, too.

What do I look for? To be honest, I like it all--from the completely useless, but funny programs to the legitimately useful everyday apps. When I sift through the various lists of apps on … Read more

Week in review: Taming the wild Web

The browser battles are heating up, with Microsoft, Mozilla, and Apple all releasing offerings to entice Web surfers into their respective camps.

Microsoft released the second public beta for Internet Explorer 8, bringing it up to par with alternative browsers such as Opera, Apple's Safari, and Mozilla's Firefox in terms of security and features.

IE 8 adds a Security pull-down menu between Page and Tools on the main toolbar. In addition to blocking phishing sites, IE 8 now highlights the main domain of any Web site you visit. IE 8 also contains a cross-site scripting filter, one of … Read more

Week in review: Apple's mea culpa?

Apple has a message for its customers: let us make it up to you.

In an apparent attempt to make up for the problems that plagued MobileMe's launch in July, Apple has announced that it will extend user accounts another 60 days for free--that's on top of the 30-day free extension Apple gave users in July.

In an e-mail sent to MobileMe subscribers announcing the extension, Apple acknowledged that the Web services suite needs more work:

We have already made many improvements to MobileMe, but we still have many more to make. To recognize our users' patience, … Read more
Listen up, 'New York Times': German papers thrive with tech

Newspapers are doomed because of the Internet.

That's the conventional wisdom one hears in the U.S., but according to a story last week in BusinessWeek, some German newspapers are defying the odds and are using technology to boost sales.

Some of Germany's biggest papers are seeing growth, even double-digit growth, at a time when some of this country's biggest daily papers, such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, and Los Angeles Times, are posting declining earnings.

So the U.S. could learn a thing or two from the Germans, right?

"It's too … Read more

Week in review: Static on the iPhone line

The iPhone 3G is proving to be a gold mine for Apple, but some users feel like they are getting the shaft.

Apple has raked in about $30 million in sales of iPhone applications in the one month since the company opened its App Store and brought the iPhone 3G onto the market, according to CEO Steve Jobs. And Jobs sees big numbers ahead, if Apple continues its current pace of selling an average of $1 million worth of applications per day. At that rate, Apple would reap up to $360 million by the first anniversary of the launch of … Read more

What we Craved this week

If you have a short memory or didn't have time to catch up on Crave this week (editor's note: for shame!), no worries, we've got you covered. Here's a look back at the truly interesting, strange, and wonderfully silly gadgets we checked out.

• OMG, no way: You hate the idea of buying a standalone Blu-ray player.

• I have waaaay too many USB keys on my desk. I'd feel better about it if they were all made like this.

• Some people have a lot of time on their hands. And then there's … Read more

Week in review: Let the games begin online

The Olympic Games officially begin on Friday in Beijing--and on the Web.

Citizens of Ethiopia and Thailand are among the international Web users who will be able to view online content from the Beijing Olympics via YouTube. While NBC holds the Olympics digital video-on-demand rights in the U.S., rights have not been sold on an exclusive basis in more than 70 countries. In those countries, people can access the specialized YouTube Olympics channel.

The International Olympic Committee said the Olympic Broadcasting Services will produce the YouTube channel content and will include highlights, news clips, and daily videos of the … Read more
