An expert hired by Apple had determined the company was due $114 million in lost profits because of Samsung's use of technology under Apple's patent No. 7,844,915, also known as "pinch to zoom." The '915 patent covers technology that can distinguish whether a user is scrolling with one finger versus using … Read more
Phil Schiller, head of marketing at Apple, testified Friday in court here that the reason Samsung gained so much market share in smartphones was because it copied Apple. That's also why Samsung flourished while other smartphone makers such as Motorola and Nokia floundered, he said.
"There is a difference," Schiller said. "One is copying. The others are not -- as much."
Along with suing Samsung, Apple also has pursued lawsuits against Motorola, HTC, and other rivals.
Samsung's attorneys, meanwhile, have argued that people … Read more

Schiller, speaking in a retrial for damages owed by Samsung for infringing Apple patents, said Apple's marketing would have had even more success if Samsung hadn't released similar products.
"This was an incredibly important time," he said. "As this [infringement] has been occurring, it's harder for us to get new customers and bring them into … Read more

Schiller took the stand in a damages retrial against Samsung with only 11 minutes left in the session. That gave him just enough time to introduce himself and talk briefly about his role at Apple, the development of the iPhone, and the event introducing the product.

Instagram is the current king of the photo-sharing hill, but it's no longer ad-free and there is still no iPad version of the app. If an Instagram feed interrupted by ads has you headed for the exits, or if you like to view and share photos on a tablet, then I suggest you give EyeEm a whirl. It's a free app whose most recent update for iOS introduced iPad support, and it's also available for Android.
Launch EyeEm and after signing up via Facebook or email, you'll find yourself staring at a grid of nine subject … Read more
There's no shortage of battery monitoring applications in the Play store. Each of these apps offers different solutions when it comes to viewing your battery's percentage. Some add an icon to the status bar, others can place a widget on your home or lock screen, and some even place a permanent notification in the notification shade. While all of these solutions work, none is ideal.
Android should support this natively, without requiring a third-party app; I know I'm not alone in thinking this. Thankfully, it looks like Google is finally working on adding a battery percentage feature … Read more
