Windows Phone 8 trio hitting Verizon for the holidays

Microsoft is getting a little cozier with Verizon, saying the nation's biggest carrier will offer three Windows Phone 8 devices for the coming holiday season.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, speaking during an event today, said Verizon will be offering the Nokia Lumia 822, and that the 8X by HTC will ship by Thanksgiving. Verizon also will offer the Samsung ATIV Odyssey in December.

The 8X will retail at $199 for 16 GB, while the Lumia 822 will sell for $99.

Meanwhile, AT&T will be selling the Lumia 820, Lumia 920, and Windows Phone 8X, while T-Mobile will … Read more

Apple, Samsung control 106 percent of industry's profits

Controlling all of the mobile market's profits doesn't appear to be enough for Apple and Samsung anymore. Now they're actually generating more than 100 percent of the industry's earnings -- 106 percent, to be precise -- according to a report from Canaccord Genuity.

That may seem impossible, but it's largely because rivals -- like Research In Motion, Nokia, and Motorola -- posted operating losses during the September quarter, the firm said.

"With Samsung extending its overall smartphone and Android market share combined with Apple's strength in high-end smartphones, competing smartphone [original equipment manufacturers] … Read more

The Lumia 822 will work on Verizon's 4G LTE network and come with Nokia's Drive+ for turn-by-turn navigation. The handset will sell for $99 with a two-year contract.

Neither Nokia nor Verizon said exactly when the handset might … Read more

Qualcomm CEO says Windows legacy apps have to go touch

Older Windows programs will have to be updated to incorporate touch capabilities, Qualcomm's chief executive said. And that's something that should help adoption of the newest version of the operating system.

Paul Jacobs, speaking today during a small press roundtable in New York before tomorrow's Windows 8 launch, said there will be "FUD" -- fear, uncertainty, and doubt -- around legacy applications when Windows RT first launches, but the capabilities offered by the new system will ultimately win over consumers.

He noted that older applications will have to be updated to take advantage of the … Read more

Nokia Lumia 920 no longer available through Best Buy

Best Buy's preorder offer on the Lumia 920 didn't last long.

On Sunday, the retail chain first listed the 920 on its Web site for customers who wanted to preorder the Windows Phone 8 handset. But now a search for the Lumia 920 on the Best Buy Web site fails to turn up any results.

A direct link to the 920's Best Buy page provided by WPCentral lists the phone as "Sold out online." The page shows a price of just $149.99 for the 32GB version with the standard two-year contract.

But why the … Read more

The listing doesn't indicate when customers can expect delivery, saying only that the phones "will ship when available." Earlier this month, AT&… Read more

A Surface phone might be a good idea after all, Nokia's CEO said today.

Stephen Elop, speaking during an investor call, said that a Windows Phone from Microsoft would be a "stimulant to the ecosystem," according to The Verge.

"We're encouraging of HTC and Samsung and Microsoft or whomever to have devices in the market and to be making whatever investments that helps spur the ecosystem on," Elop said, according to the report.

Rumors have been circulating for months that Microsoft was going to make its own Windows Phones and possibly market them under … Read more

Nokia's Q3 show phone sales down by a fifth

This can hardly be encouraging news: Nokia's third-quarter financial results show the number of handsets it sold down by 22 percent compared to last year and 1 percent on the quarter before.

The company said Thursday it sold 82.9 million handsets in the quarter, with revenue from phone sales falling by 34 percent compared to Q3 2011.

Nokia's overall revenue also dropped during the quarter, to 7.239 billion euros ($9.48 billion) -- a decrease of 19 percent year on year, and 4 percent quarter on quarter -- compared with $12.2 billion in the third … Read more

Nokia CEO Stephen Elop: We'll spend to break through (Q&A)

Nokia CEO Stephen Elop knows that the U.S. is a clutch market for Nokia's revival, and competition is only getting hotter.

With the Nokia Lumia 920 coming to AT&T -- and apparently only AT&T -- Nokia will have to work even harder to battle Android and the iPhone on multiple carriers apiece, while also fending off HTC, whose lookalike HTC Windows Phone 8X will also flood the market on three providers.

Earlier this week, I sat down with Nokia CEO Stephen Elop in San Francisco to dive into Nokia's strategy for breaking through.… Read more
