How to use your AV receiver's speaker calibration

Most new AV receivers come with an "auto setup" or "automatic calibration" feature, but despite the word automatic, these features can stump AV novices. If you're setting up an AV receiver for the first time, this guide will put you on the right track.

First, let's describe what auto setup systems do.

They send test tones to all the speakers and subwoofer, and use a microphone to pick up the sound of the speakers in your room. Auto setup systems determine speaker sizes and volume levels, set the subwoofer-to-satellite crossover frequency, measure distances from each of the speakers to the listener, and confirm that all of the speaker cables are correctly hooked up. Some receivers also use equalization to balance the frequency response of all the speakers.

Auto setup systems go by different names, but they all do approximately the same thing. Denon and Onkyo feature Audyssey; Sony has Digital Cinema Auto Calibration, Pioneer Multi Channel Acoustic Calibration, and Yamaha uses a Parametric Room Acoustic Optimizer.

The exact positioning of the auto calibration microphone is crucial for achieving accurate results. Some auto setup systems work from just one mic position, which would be the primary spot where you sit when watching movies by yourself. Ideally the mic should be placed at the same height as your ears when you're sitting watching a movie.

If you have a camera tripod, use it to place the mic at ear height; perfectionists should move the couch entirely out of the way. Lacking a tripod place the mic on the back of the couch, atop the highest pillow.… Read more

The disappearing Apple 20-inch display

According to MacRumors and my own sleuthing on Apple's site, Apple has removed the 20-inch Cinema Display from its online store.

MacRumors speculates that Apple is gearing up for a refresh of its 20-inch Cinema Display in the form of a new LED-based 20-incher with a Mini DisplayPort connection like the 24-inch LED Cinema Display released last year.

No official word from Apple yet, of course, but here's hoping that if this is true, the company at least includes a DVI to Mini DisplayPort adapter with the 20-incher so more than just MacBook owners will get some use … Read more

Turn the lights down on any YouTube video

It's no secret YouTube has a "dimmer switch" that works, and works well. It exists for some long-form partner content like episodes of Star Trek, but is not generally available for others. Services like Hulu have popularized the feature as a nice way to get rid of some of the distracting elements off to the side of the video. In YouTube's case, this is advertisements and the often awful user comments below.

To skip having to wait for YouTube to add it, there's YouTube Cinema, a new Firefox extension that will automatically display any YouTube … Read more

Philips to make your movies fit once and for all!

Many people may just now be getting used to the idea of the 16:9 aspect ratio HDTVs have. The whole black bars at the top and bottom just kinda throw people off I guess.

Personally, I've never had a problem with this. I just never understood how someone could prefer pan scan movies over letterbox once the difference was explained to them. I mean, you're getting the whole movie with Letterbox and a cheap knockoff with "Fullscreen" that has its edges cut off. Not to mention really awkward pans. Yeah, I'm a movie snob, … Read more

LG LHB977: Blu-ray home theater system streams online video, includes extra inputs

Nestled squarely between the LHB954 and LHB979 in LG's 2009 home theater system line-up is the LHB977. While the midrange package lacks the bundled wireless rear-speaker option and champagne-glass design of the 979, it's still loaded with features: 5.1 speaker array with funky front tallboy speakers; built-in Blu-ray player with Profile 2.0/BD-Live capability and Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD audio decoding; support for streaming online Netflix, CinemaNow, and YouTube video; and two extra HDMI inputs, useful for connecting game consoles and DVRs. Look for the LHB977 in the spring of 2009 (price TBD).

LG Blu-ray players stream Netflix, CinemaNow, and YouTube

In 2008, LG's BD300 set itself apart from other Blu-ray players by becoming the first one to include compatibility with the Netflix's "Watch Instantly" streaming service. Unfortunately, the uniqueness of the feature was short-lived: within weeks, Netflix support was added to the Xbox 360, TiVo HD DVRs, and a pair of rival Blu-ray decks from Samsung. Now, LG's back with its second take on the Blu-ray/Netflix player, the BD370, which will also include the ability to stream online content from CinemaNow (pay-per-view) and YouTube (free).

Aside from those two new online content providers, the … Read more

Chances are, you can't use Apple's new LED display yet

After a little teasing, we finally have the full review of the Apple 24-inch LED Cinema Display.

The most disappointing thing about the display is that unless you own a MacBook with a Mini DisplayPort connection, you won't be able to use it. That is until third parties release a Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter for it.

Since we could only test it on a MacBook, you won't see any performance numbers here, since our DisplayMate-based performance scores are based on a specific configuration. We do try to give as much performance perspective as possible, however.

Photos: Apple LED Cinema Display from all angles

We got the 24-inch Apple LED Cinema Display in Thursday, and well, it looks nice. No idea how it performs yet, as thanks to Apple's commitment to Mini DisplayPort it's currently only compatible with the new MacBooks that include the connection.

We're hoping to get a MacBook in from Apple on Friday, and then we can test away. In the meantime, check out a few shots we took.
