Nvidia bumps up laptop graphics to GForce 9M series

Laptop gamers usually have a pretty serious case of desktop envy when it comes to their graphics cards, especially since even midprice desktops can sport water-cooled SLI dual-card setups these days.

It's actually gotten a bit better lately, as laptop gamers have had access to Nvidia's GeForce 8800 technology--putting them in the same general ballpark as the desktop cards. But when desktop PCs got the latest GeForce 9800 cards a few months ago, we were again feeling a little left out.

Today at Computex, the computer trade show in Taiwan, Nvidia unveiled a new lineup of laptop GPUs, … Read more

Intel ready with Atom processors for low-cost notebooks

Intel is ready to ship the latest edition of its Atom processor family, this time going after the emerging market for low-cost subnotebooks.

The N270 and N230 are processors designed for what Intel calls "netbooks" and "nettops," and the company plans to unveil them Tuesday at Computex in Taiwan. The new chips are basically the same chips as the earlier Atom processors released for mobile Internet devices, but they have been tweaked slightly for use with bigger Internet access devices, said Erik Reid, director of Intel's Mobile Platforms Group, on a conference call.

Asus rolls out the Eee 901 and Eee PC 1000

We know you've probably just taken the shrink wrap off your shiny new 9-inch Asus Eee PC 900, but it's already time for the next version of the insanely popular netbook-style laptop.

These new models, just unveiled at Computex in Taiwan, are called the 901 and the 1000, have 8.9- and 10-inch screens, respectively, and will feature a 1.6GHz Atom CPU from Intel, replacing the now-dated Celeron M that's been one of our few pain points with the otherwise excellent Eee PC.

Asus promises new power-management software, called Super Hybrid Engine technology, that can purportedly … Read more

Hey, look! Full-size systems from Asus

Lest you be mistaken, Asus makes full-size systems, too. In addition to introducing its Eee Box SFF PC at Computex today along with adding WiMAX to its Eee PC minilaptop, Asus had its first gaming desktop on display along with its G70 gaming laptop.

The Ares Gaming PC serves up the expected high-end components, including an Intel Core 2 Extreme CPU, up to 8GB of DDR3 memory, and support for either Nvidia Quad SLI or ATI CrossfireX graphics. It'll carry up to 4TB of drive space and keeps all its parts running smoothly with a liquid-cooling system. As for … Read more

Nvidia's mobile ambitions adding MIDs to the list

Nvidia is doubling down on its budding processor business for the next generation of mobile computers.

This week at Computex, Nvidia plans to show off its new Tegra brand for mobile application processors. Earlier this year, the company unveiled its first processor for smartphones, the APX 2500. It's now adding two processors to its Tegra brand, with plans to target the emerging Mobile Internet Device category, according to Mike Rayfield, general manager of the company's mobile business.

Nvidia is best known for its graphics processors, of course, but has been taking steps toward a mobile future since its … Read more

Acer gets in on the Netbook act

We just saw Dell's semi-undercover attempt at a small, inexpensive laptop, and now Acer is getting in on the action, if these leaked shots of something called the Acer Aspire One are to be believed.

First spotted on the Web site UMPC Portal, and then quickly spreading around blogville, it purportedly has a 1.6Ghz Intel Atom CPU, 512MB of RAM, a 4GB SSD hard drive, and runs Windows XP on an 8.9-inch screen (like the Asus Eee PC 900).

No release date or price yet, but there's a strong possibility we'll see this unveiled at … Read more

Intel now launching Centrino 2 in July

Intel doesn't just make and market CPUs--the company builds "platforms," which is a fancy way of saying it likes to bundle together a set of specs for a particular combination of CPU, motherboard chipset, and Wi-Fi interface, and slap a sticker on it.

The Centrino brand has been a big success, while other attempts, such as AMD's Live and Intel's Viiv, have not. Naturally, we've all been eagerly awaiting the launch of Centrino 2, expected at Computex Taipei 2008 (which will take place June 3-7), with the new platform followed by updated laptops from … Read more

Asus Ebox set to debut in June at Taipei show

Hang on to your loins--it is but seven days before the launch of the hotly anticipated Asus Ebox--the desktop version of the Asus Eee PC. Are we excited? Does a bear do his business in the woods and clear up the mess with a fluffy, white rabbit? That's a yes, geekoids!

Today, our sources have confirmed the Ebox--formerly known as the Eee DT--will have a 160GB hard drive, 2GB of RAM, and run the same Linux operating system found on the Eee PC. We won't know whether it'll use an Intel Atom CPU until Asus lifts … Read more

Nvidia to take part in Via Isaiah launch

Nvidia will take part in the launch of Via's Isaiah processor slated for next week, just prior to Computex in Taipei, Taiwan.

Via will provide the central processing unit and motherboard, plus the core logic (chipset) solution, while Nvidia will provide the graphics processing unit, said Drew Henry, general manager of Nvidia's platform products division.

Nvidia will offer standalone "discrete" graphics for both notebook and desktop platforms using the Isaiah chip, Henry said.

"We are participating in the launch. We wish to work with them in demonstrating any number of different visual computing applications," … Read more
