DimDim nabs Index Ventures...and $6 million

As is often the case with "news," the most interesting story is in the subtext. As an example, DimDim, the open-source web conferencing company, just raised $6 million in a Series B round of financing. That's great news for DimDim, but it's not the most important news. (Though I'm sure DimDim employees will beg to differ. :-)

No, the most important news is who funded this round. Index Ventures.

For those who don't follow the open-source world very closely, Index has funded some of the world's best open-source companies, many funded by Danny Rimer, open-source rock star. … Read more

Killing Google

Mark Cuban has an interesting slant on how to beat Google. Buy out the top sites in Google's Index and watch Google flounder:

But what about the Google Index, all the websites that are indexed by Google ? What is it worth to be in the Google Index ? What would you, as a website owner require in order to remove your site from the Google Index and no longer be available when someone does a google search ?

It should just be a matter of dollars and cents and sense, shouldn't it ?

Interesting thought, and a strategy that only a … Read more

Timex concept is a literal death watch

Years ago we came across a page called Deathforecast.com, which predicts how long you'll live depending on the answers to a couple dozen questions. That was morbid enough, but now there's something that does it one better by providing a constant physical reminder of one's mortality.

The "Life Index Watch" is a concept developed for a Timex competition that keeps track of your remaining days based on personal biometrics. And just to make sure you don't miss one nerve-wracking second, it's meant to be "worn like a patch on the skin,&… Read more

BenQ's new handset manages your health

BenQ might not jump into your head when it comes to mobiles as fast as, say, Boris Johnson when you say "useless foppish toff," but it's still in the game. Its new C36 handset looks almost identical to 3's Skype handset we looked at back in October (and still use). It's a music phone with support for MP3, WAV, AMR, and good old MIDI files, has a 176 x 220 LCD display and--chickety-check this out--"health management."

No, it won't perform the Heimlich maneuver when you're choking on a granddad-friendly Werther's, … Read more

Yahoo to acquire marketing analytics company

Yahoo announced Wednesday that it plans to acquire Tensa Kft., a Hungarian company known professionally as IndexTools, which makes marketing analytics tools for the Web.

Financial terms of the deal were not released, but Yahoo hopes that the acquisition will be finalized by the middle of 2008. Yahoo, currently battling with both a Microsoft takeover offensive and its status as second-string to Google in online advertising, plans to use IndexTools' technology to bolster its existing marketing analytics software. The initial target, a release from Yahoo explained, will be the 150,000 small and medium-sized businesses using Yahoo's marketing analytics … Read more

Prevent system slowdowns by tweaking Vista's indexing options

After I compared three popular desktop-search programs a couple of weeks ago, the folks at Google contacted me about a couple of inaccuracies in that post. I had thought that because local files are listed above Web sites when you use Google to search in your browser, the ads that appear on the results page are related to the content of the local files. In fact, Google keeps an index of your local files on its servers only when you enable the Search Across Computers feature, which is off by default. And even then, the index disappears once the search … Read more

Data-mining detects the disaffected

Here's another reason to get off that antisocial kick and get with the networking.

The Air Force is developing a data-mining technology meant to root out disaffected insiders based on their e-mail activity--or lack thereof, according to an article in this month's International Journal of Security and Networks.

The technology, based on something called Probabilistic Latent Semantic Indexing (PDF), scours an organization's e-mail traffic and constructs a graph of social network interactions illustrating employee activity. If a worker suddenly stops socializing online, abruptly shifts alliances within the organization, or starts developing an unhealthy interest in "sensitive … Read more

Google Alerts: what they are, and how to use them

Yesterday Google rolled out video alerts to its Google Alerts service. If you've never used Alerts, it's a handy way to get Web content updates delivered straight to your e-mail inbox based on keywords. In the case of the new video search, Google will deliver links to videos it's indexed. So how is this helpful? Say you're a big video fan, and you dig seeing those Diet Coke and Mentos videos online. There are always some crazy teenagers out in the suburbs doing new things with them, and that equates to a lot of new videos. … Read more

Photos: The cleanest hybrids of 2007

Power and Associates this week published its Automotive Environmental Index of the 30 most environmental cars on the road. No fewer than 10 of the top 30 are hybrid vehicles--up from eight hybrids in last year's shortlist. Check out our slide show of the top 10 greenest hybrids.
