Apple fanboys and Samsung believers aren't going to like this: Google's Moto X has been crowned the king of durability.
The latest "breakability" score by protection plan company SquareTrade claims Moto X is the best surviving smartphone when it comes to drops, slides, and water dunks. Coming in second place is Apple's iPhone 5S, then Apple's iPhone 5C, and lastly Samsung's Galaxy S4. SquareTrade only tested these four smartphones, so its unclear how other brands and models would rate.
Every year SquareTrade tests the durability of new smartphones to see how they fair … Read more
In patients with cirrhosis, a cognitive dysfunction called hepatic encephalopathy can sometimes arise, causing altered levels of consciousness, confusion, and sometimes, in advanced stages, even coma and death.
Now a smartphone app developed to help diagnose the milder minimal hepatic encephalopathy -- which has until now been almost impossible to diagnose due to the extremely subtle symptoms -- has been found to be a fast and effective screening tool, according to a new Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) study published in the September issue of Hepatology.… Read more
When Notification Center was first introduced, users were only allowed to access it when the device was unlocked by swiping down from the top of the screen.
With iOS 7 it's now possible to view notifications stored in Notification Center from the lock screen, as well as when the device is unlocked. Of course there are still actionable notifications that appear on the lock screen, but as we've discussed before, having every single app push notifications to the lock screen is a huge battery drain.
Apple realized a way of getting around the battery drain is to give … Read more
Some 5 million veterans in the US are estimated to be suffering from depression, according to the National Science Foundation, and that doesn't take into account the full range of behavioral health issues, including post-traumatic stress disorder, general anxiety, and drug abuse.
So a few years back the NSF teamed up with former Navy pilot Rich Gengler and former Army sergeant Justin Savage to launch a free online screening and counseling program called Vets Prevail in an attempt to help veterans transition to life back home. Now, the NSF said the approach is working, with the group reporting a 99.76 percent user satisfaction rate and 98.3 percent efficacy in lowering clinical measures among the 16,000-plus veterans who've gone through the program since its inception three years ago.… Read more
I suspect many will balk at its $7.99 price, but if you use a Mac and your line of work has you constantly switching your screen resolution, EasyRes may be a worthwhile investment.
The app installs a small icon in your Mac's menu bar. From this icon, you can quickly and easily change the screen resolution for any connected display. It saves a bit of time from accessing display settings in System Preferences.
Click on the EasyRes icon in your menu bar and you'll see your available resolution options, along with any recently used resolutions. For Retina … Read more
Apple is reportedly testing iPhones with larger screens than previous models, according to a new report.
The Wall Street Journal says Apple is going as large as 6 inches, which would be 2 inches bigger than its current models.
Devices of that size, which are 4.8 inches to 6 inches, are not anticipated alongside the ones in this latest crop of models, the Journal says, citing sources.
Apple stuck with the same 3.5-inch display on the first five generations of the iPhone, making the jump to a 4-inch display with the iPhone 5. Along the way, the resolution … Read more
OK, Apple, cards on the table.
I've been an iPhone user since the beginning. I've owned every model through the 4S, upgrading on an almost annual basis even though it meant paying extra. (Ah, the joys of the AT&T contract and its early-upgrade penalties.)
Why no iPhone 5? That little bit of extra screen-estate and slightly improved camera weren't enough to loosen my wallet, and so for the first time I held tight to last year's model. My 4S is soon to celebrate its second birthday, at which time I'll be out of … Read more

Turning a wall into a touch-screen computer has many uses -- it could help teachers instruct classes or be used by shops to display product information. It could even be used for fun to play interactive active games.
Microsoft announced on Tuesday that Ubi has worked to develop the software with more than 50 organizations and is now accepting orders for purchase.
"We want human collaboration and information to be just … Read more
