Roku officially unveils new game-enabled video players

Roku is updating its lineup of streaming video boxes with a trio of new products for 2011. The new models add Wii-like casual gaming, controlled by a new Bluetooth motion remote. The ubiquitous Angry Birds is the debut Roku title, and it's included for free with the flagship $100 Roku box.

The news of fresh Rokus confirms weeks of rumors and FCC leaks that had surfaced earlier on Engadget and Zatz Not Funny.

The new game-enabled boxes are known as the Roku 2 line--a particularly curious name, since it's the third or fourth incarnation of the streaming-media box (depending on how you count) that first debuted in May 2008. Truth in numbering notwithstanding, the new models carry over the basic functions of the existing Roku line, with more than 250 streaming media channels (including Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Instant, MLB, NHL, NBA, UFC, and dozens of others), HD video, and built-in Wi-Fi support. The tiny enclosures are smaller even than archrival Apple TV--just 3.3-inch square, and less than an inch high. … Read more

Will Netflix reverse price hike? Outlook not good

Some Netflix customers are holding out hope that the Web's No. 1 rental service, will reverse a decision to raise prices, according to a CNET poll. Comments made last night by Netflix spokesman Steve Swasey, however, didn't sound encouraging.

"These are our prices," Swasey said when asked whether Netflix might change its mind or reduce the amount of the price increase.

An unknown number of Netflix subscribers have taken to the Web to bash the company for doing away with a hybrid price that covered the rental of streaming video and discs. Customers who used to … Read more

Hulu Plus lands on four more Android handsets

Hulu Plus is now available on four more Android-based smartphones, the video-streaming company announced yesterday.

The service is being offered on HTC's Evo 4G, ThunderBolt, MyTouch 4G, and G2. With those additions, Hulu Plus is now supported on 10 Android devices. The Nexus One, Nexus S, and Motorola Atrix were among the devices previously supported.

Although it was available on a host of mobile platforms, including iOS, Hulu Plus didn't arrive on Android until last month. Hulu said at the time that users could try it out for one month at no cost to see if they liked … Read more

Get a 32-inch Vizio Internet-connected TV for $299.99

In the future, all TVs will offer Internet connectivity. I mean, who wants to pay extra for, say, a Roku box when a TV can build in apps for Netflix, Hulu, Pandora, and the like?

Vizio is ahead of the curve in that respect, with many of its models offering built-in Wi-Fi and a healthy roster of Internet apps.

Here's one of them. TigerDirect has the refurbished Vizio E322VL 32-inch LCD HDTV for $299.99, plus $21 for shipping. Or, if you order the TV through eBay, shipping is free! (Consider yourself warned: this may sell out before the … Read more

A blast from the past

Winamp has been around for ages--it's one of the first media players we remember using--and it's still alive and kicking. Winamp Lite is a scaled-down version of the program, offering the basic character of Winamp with fewer features and in a smaller package. Although we personally find Winamp to be dated and awkward to use, hard-core fans will likely approve of this lightweight version of the software.

Opening Winamp Lite was a blast from the past, as its interface has remained largely unchanged over the years. It's still full of tiny text and buttons with hard-to-read labels. … Read more

Where Netflix streaming is thin, YouTube could rule

Having overdosed recently on the supply of documentaries and foreign films within Netflix's streaming library, I was hankering for something that went "boom." But as far as interesting action titles were concerned, Netflix's cupboards were bare.

Meanwhile, over at YouTube's relatively new and much-ignored movie rental service, the streaming shelves overflowed with full-length titles that, while not new, were a couple of grades higher than the dregs found at Netflix that day. At YouTube, there was "Gran Torino," "The Bourne Supremacy," and "Sucker Punch." I went with "Bourne.&… Read more

Report: Hulu courting a 'range' of potential suitors

Hulu is planning to hold discussions with a "range" of potential buyers, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Citing anonymous sources, the Journal reported today that Hulu will be meeting with potential suitors "in the coming weeks." However, forces at play within the company might make a sale difficult, the Journal's sources said.

According to the sources, Hulu CEO Jason Kilar is currently having trouble getting his company's owners--ABC, Fox, and NBC Universal--to offer more content to the site. The owners reportedly believe that they can make more money on their content by partnering … Read more

Amazon adds free videos, pushing Prime

If you happened to have hit Amazon's homepage today, you may have noticed a big note from CEO Jeff Bezos in the middle of the screen, pitching users to sign up to become Prime members.

As most Amazon users are aware, that $79 Prime membership gets you free two-day shipping on any item where Amazon offers "Free Shipping." But in an attempt to lure more folks into becoming Prime members, Amazon's pushing its "unlimited, commercial-free instant streaming of thousands of movies and TV shows." Bezos' note says Amazon is now adding 1,000 additional &… Read more

Roadshow for iPad saves videos for offline viewing

The laws of nature indicate that if there's no Internet connection, you can't watch streaming videos. Roadshow for iPad defies that law, downloading videos to your tablet for offline viewing.

This is exactly as awesome as it sounds--though let's get the bad news out of the way right now: Roadshow doesn't support YouTube (owing to Apple's App Store restrictions). So much for saving all your favorite cute kitten videos.

You can, however, pilfer clips from other sources, including CollegeHumor, Funny or Die, The Onion, and TED Talks. In fact, all four of these sites are … Read more
