Trendnet to ship USB 3.0 hub

Most existing computers don't have support for USB 3.0, and for those few that do, chances are the number of ports is limited to just two.

If you want to increase the amount of these blue ports without having to install another add-in card, Trendnet has something for you.

The company announced yesterday the availability of its four-port USB 3.0 hub, called TU3-H4, which turns one USB 3.0 port into four of them, allowing you to connect more USB 3.0-based devices to your computer at a time. The TU3-H4 hub also works with USB 2.… Read more

USB 3.0 option for Mac Pros

When Buffalo released a number of USB 3.0 products a about a year ago, there was some confusion over whether or not the included USB 3.0 PCI-express card would work in Macs. If so this would have brought USB 3.0 connectivity to OS X far sooner than expected.

Unfortunately the card supplied by Buffalo did not work in OS X, though users could boot to Windows installations in Boot Camp to utilize the hardware for USB 3.0 performance.

A couple of weeks ago electronics developer CalDigit made a similar announcement, releasing a new AV Drive with … Read more

Want a laptop with USB 3.0? The few, the proud

USB 3.0 has been slow to arrive in laptops, but there are a few models on the market that boast this high-speed connection technology.

The current USB 2.0 standard, which is found on virtually all laptops today, has been around a long time. Intel laid the groundwork for widespread use on PCs and devices in spring 2002 when it put the technology in its silicon. Eight years later, the advantages of moving to a faster standard are clear for devices like digital cameras, camcorders, and hard drives: transfer rates jump from 480 megabits per second on USB 2.0 to as much as 5 gigabits per second with USB 3.0. And reviews testify to a significant speed increase.

One of the sticking points, however, of mass adoption by laptop makers is the lack of direct support in Intel chipsets, as this blog posted on a Dell-hosted Web page explains. One of the oft-cited reasons put forth by analysts for the lack of broad USB 3.0 support is that many devices, like printers, simply don't benefit from moving to 3.0. Another reason: a number of laptops already ship with the faster eSATA standard, which Intel supports in its mobile chipsets, not to mention desktop variants. (Many HP Pavilion laptops, for example, also come with eSATA.)

Moreover, other technologies lurk as potential replacements for USB 3.0--at least in its current format. Light Peak, for instance, offers even greater transfer speeds and has received support from high-profile companies like Apple and Sony. That said, Light Peak won't appear… Read more

LaCie unveils its first USB 3.0 RAID drive

If you are looking for a superfast USB 3.0 external hard drive with redundancy data protection, there's now another option. Following in the footsteps of Sans Digital, LaCie announced Tuesday its own version of a USB 3.0-based external hard drive with RAID support: the LaCie 2big USB 3.0.

The company says that the new drive is available in up to a 4TB capacity and comes with two separate internal hard drives. These hard drives can be set up either in RAID 0 for fast speed and maximum amount of storage (with no data protection) or RAID … Read more

LaCie intros new USB 3.0-powered external drives

Lacie dropped two new USB 3.0-powered external hard drives Wednesday--a high-speed 3.0 update to the CNET-favored Rikiki and the sexy aluminum Minimus USB 3.0 desktop hard drive. Both externals are wrapped in brushed aluminum that protects the drive from scratches and light spills and also serves to dissipate heat from the drive while in use.

The two devices are compatible with Mac and PC OS and each comes bundled with 10GB of free Wuala storage in the cloud, making it easy to share files with coworkers and friends. And don't stress if your system isn't fitted with the latest USB 3.0 connection--the drives are also backward-compatible with version 2.0.

The LaCie Rikiki 3.0 will come in 500GB and 1TB capacities, but the LaCie Web site only has the 500GB in stock for $100, just $15 more than the 500GB Rikiki USB 2.0. Alternatively, the LaCie lists the 1TB Minimus USB 3.0 for $130. Both drives are available now.

Iomega to add USB 3.0 to eGo portable drives

Iomega announced Tuesday that its plans to equip all of its eGo portable hard drives in 500GB and 1TB capacities with the new USB 3.0 interface by early October. Iomega is a little late to the USB 3.0 game as Western Digital, Seagate, and many other storage vendors released their USB 3.0-based external hard drive a long time ago.

According to Iomega, to make up for this, the new USB 3.0 portable drive will share the same software bundle that comes with its existing USB 2.0 drives. And most importantly, according to the company, its … Read more

Sans Digital announces USB 3.0-based RAID storage solution

Though USB 3.0-based external hard drives, such as the Western Digital My Book 3.0 or the Seagate BlackArmor PS 110 USB 3.0, are getting more and more popular, those that can handle RAIDs are still hard to find.

Sans Digital announced Thursday two new direct attached storage solutions that are arguably the first on the market that offer both. They are the four-bay TowerRAID TR4UTP and the five-bay TowerRAID TR5UTP. Apart from the different number of hard-drive bays, these two external hard-drive enclosures both support USB 3.0 and eSATA connections. They are designed to host multiple … Read more

3M draws curtain on USB 3.0 display

We've already reviewed several external hard drives that use USB 3.0, but 3M just unveiled a monitor that connects to the new standard.

Pocket Lint posted the first images of the 3M demo monitor that displaying 1366 X 768 resolution on an 18.5-inch screen. Those specs might seem a little behind, but the real boon for USB 3.0 is its 5 gigabit bandwidth transmission compared to the 480 megabit limitation of USB 2.0.

The demo shows two USB 3.0 cables connected to a desktop computer powering the 8-watt display, since individual USB 3.0 … Read more
