Sony to skip 2012 CTIA

The annual CTIA Wireless show usually brings us a host of shiny new cell phones. And given the event's U.S. focus, we have the pleasure of knowing that all the handsets introduced eventually will end up stateside.

Yet, when the 2012 show beings May 8 in New Orleans, CNET has learned that Sony won't be in attendance. In an e-mail, spokeswoman Chelsea Alexander didn't offer a reason for the company's absence, but she did confirm that it won't be landing in the Big Easy. So not only does that mean no press conference or … Read more

Sony today announced that it plans to begin issuing Android 4.0 updates to its 2011 Xperia smartphones beginning in mid-April.

The first models expected to see Ice Cream Sandwich will be the Xperia Arc S, Xperia Neo V, and Xperia Ray. These updates should take around four to six weeks to complete and will depend on the various markets and carriers.

Jumping ahead to May and early June, Sony expects to deploy Android 4.0 to the remaining models, including the Xperia Arc, Xperia Play, Xperia Neo, and Xperia Active. Sony's new Xperia S won't be upgraded … Read more

Sony's Wes Anderson-directed phone ad hits the Net

Dropping your cell phone in the toilet is maddening enough already. But after watching Wes Anderson's new commercial for Sony's Xperia smartphone, you'll have to add a gigantic dose of guilt to the experience.

All those poor little robots! Happily, selflessly--and oh so cutely--residing in your gadget and taking care of your every communications need. And you carelessly--nay, callously--drown them in the loo!… Read more

Sony Xperia S ad directed by Wes Anderson

Sony has turned to indie darling Wes Anderson, director of "The Royal Tenenbaums," "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou," and "Fantastic Mr. Fox" to flog its new Xperia phones.

The Sony Xperia S and its smartphone siblings are made of imagination, apparently. The ad is inspired by children's vision of a dream phone and features robots, rainbow monkeys, and phones that grow hands and feet. It's all created in Anderson's signature quirky style and backed by the tinkling tones of Sigur Ros frontman Jonsi.

Sony Xperia Sola follows fingers, performs NFC tricks

Sony's new Xperia NXT series of Android smartphones are distinctively styled but haven't exactly bowled me over with cutting-edge components or software. The latest handset to join the company's offerings also lacks quad-core processing and Android Ice Cream Sandwich but does promise a few wild mobile skills not found on other devices. … Read more

Is style alone enough to sell Sony smartphones?

I bet chances are good you haven't owned a Sony smartphone in a dog's age. In fact if you live in the U.S. you may have never purchased one of the company's mobile communication devices, let alone fallen in love with one.

This isn't an enviable position to be in for any electronics manufacturer, especially one that harbors aspirations to regain its footing in the U.S. phone market. To turn things around, Sony killed its disappointing 10-year partnership with Swedish telecom giant Ericsson. It also announced plans for multiple new handsets running Android both at CES in January and recently at Mobile World Congress. … Read more

Sony Mobile exec: Quad-core smartphones in early 2013

BARCELONA, Spain--Stephen Sneeden, product marketing manager for Sony Mobile, told CNET Asia in an interview here at Mobile World Congress that he predicts the company will likely only release quad-core Sony smartphones in early 2013. He does, however, state that this is just his assumption--the company will make the official announcements when it's ready.

"We're going to join quad-core when we feel that the performance matches the battery efficiency," he said. "Because right now we don't feel that is there. What we are going to be doing in the second half of the year is moving to the Cortex A15 architecture, which we feel outperforms the current quad-core architecture.

"You'll see in 2013, as we're evaluating the quad-core performance where it makes sense, where you're not suffering in quality and the performance truly is there, and there really is something that demanding applications need," he contiuned." That's when we make the right move to quad-core." … Read more
