Attack of the hydra-headed displays

Whether you're talking about a day trader, wannabe security guard, or voyeur extraordinaire, it seems that some people just can't get enough computer monitors to stack together. The latest example of this obsession comes from the "Paramount Parabolic Multi-Monitor Display" made by Humanscale.

Accommodating up to eight displays, the system tops even CineMassive's six- or seven-screen "MasterPlex" line. Perhaps the most impressive aspect of this set-up--which apparently provides only the rack and mounts, not the actual LCDs--is that it requires no tools. Additional monitors just "snap into place," Dvice says.

Jerry Yang reaches out to Yahoo shareholders

Jerry Yang dished out a letter to shareholders on Wednesday and much of the language was similar to that in his e-mail to employees.

But News.com readers who bashed Yang for the absence of CAPITAL LETTERS in his previously posted e-mails should take note that the shareholders have CAPITAL LETTERS in their Yang letter.

In his letter regarding Microsoft's unsolicited bid, Yang states: "I wanted to reach out to you personally to let you know why your board of directors, after a careful review by Yahoo's management along with our financial and legal advisors, believes that … Read more

Hands-on with the Readius

Polymer Vision is a company spun off from Philips. Its claim to fame is the Readius, an e-book reader which is also a mobile phone. Though it has been around for more than a year, there's renewed interest in it because it will finally be shipping in 2008. We tracked down the company's booth at the GSMA Mobile World Congress to learn more about this device.

The primary purpose of the Readius is to act as an e-book reader. Even though the display resolution is pedestrian at 320x240 pixels, the fact that it can be rolled up allows … Read more

Phone with rollout display to roll out

If we were editors for a thesaurus, "brag" would become a synonym for "concept." Companies tease consumers all the time with digital renderings of products that never see the light of day. This is why it came as quite a surprise that Polymer Vision, a spinoff from Dutch company Philips, has committed to selling its Readius mobile phone with a rollout display.

This mobile phone is not much bigger than your average candy-bar handset but still manages to include a 5-inch display that can be folded out to one side. The screen is a monochrome one (… Read more

Get more windows on the Web with a three-monitor setup

I wrote about the benefits of using multiple monitors in 2004 (see Secrets to My Excess), and I haven't wavered from my position: If you use a single monitor--unless it's a giant 30-inch model--you are missing out on one of the easiest ways to increase your productivity. Yes, I know this isn't really a Webware story, but the tools I'm about to describe have made using Web apps (all apps, really) much easier for me.

It's dead easy to add a second monitor to either a desktop or a laptop computer. The operating systems handle … Read more

The incredible shrinking SVGA screen

Sure, Panasonic may have made a splash in Vegas with its 150-inch plasma, but size isn't everything (or so we like to believe). Display maker Kopin, for example, is perfectly secure in its diminutive stature--so much so, in fact, that it claims to have invented "the world's smallest SVGA display."

But Engadget points out that the company's "CyberDisplay" SVGA (Supervideo Graphics Array ) stretches the tape measure diagonally at 0.44 inches, which happens to be the same size as its VGA (Video Graphics Array ) version, so the claim is really more about resolution … Read more

Iogear shows off Wireless USB graphics adapter

DisplayLink makes video chips that let you connect an LCD to your PC via USB, which is highly convenient for adding a second display. Even more convenient? Going wireless. Iogear introduced its Wireless USB-to-VGA Video Card that uses DisplayLink's technology to output a video signal via WUSB to multiple monitors, TVs, and projectors at up to 1,680x1,050 resolution and 16.7 million colors. Iogear expects the WUSB external graphics adapter to become commercially available in mid-2008 from monitor, PC, and peripheral manufacturers.

Connection crazy: Dell's new 30-inch LCD

Following on the heels of yesterday's Crystal LCD release, Dell is at it again today with a new 30-inch LCD monitor, the UltraSharp 3008WFP. Compared to last year's 3007WFP model, which we liked, the 3008WFP features a new look and loads more connections. The image here doesn't do it justice, but the 3008WFP has a brushed aluminum housing that sits atop a glossy, flat base (say goodbye to the Flying V stand of last year's model). And the cantilever arm allows for more flexible positioning.

Our biggest complaint with last year's model was the limited … Read more

Hannspree monitor: Not real wood, but close

We all know Hannspree is wonderfully bonkers. Why else would it sell displays that look like they fell out of a child's toy box? The latest example of its charming lunacy is the Hannspree Boston monitor--a 19-inch PC display with a wood-grain bezel.

Unlike recent offerings from LG and SweedX, it's not real wood--but it's a pretty close approximation. If you're a fan of retro designs, trees, or Crave's eco-happy sister site SmartPlanet, you should absolutely adore it. Here at Crave, we're not really feeling the whole wood theme, but the cylindrical aluminium stand … Read more
