T-Mobile updates one handset, preps for another

After a handful of missteps and false starts, another over-the-air update for the Motorola Cliq has started rolling out. It's not the Android 2.1 update that many are hoping for, but it is a minor maintenance release with generally undetectable changes.

Designed to improve features like battery life, widget response, GPS, Bluetooth, and touch-screen sensitivity, version 1.4.8 should hit all Cliq handsets this weekend. Is Verizon teasing us with more Android phones?

An internal e-mail sent around to Verizon employees made its way online earlier today and brought plenty of excitement with it.

Without giving away anything specific, the e-mail promises that new devices are launching soon. As plainly shown in the teaser image, the codename for this project is "6," leading many to speculate that six devices will be announced in the coming days.The two most obvious smartphones that come to mind are the Nexus One and the HTC Incredible.

Rumored release dates for Sprint HTC EVO 4G

The rumors surrounding the release date of the HTC EVO 4G from Sprint are starting to pick up.

According to reports received over at Engadget Mobile, two possible dates gaining some traction are June 6 and June 13. With both of those dates falling on a Sunday, these line up with previous launches for Sprint, since the carrier has a reputation for releasing handsets on Sundays.

Rash of leaks point to imminent HTC Incredible release

Verizon's next Android handset, the HTC Incredible, is becoming the carrier's worst-kept secret. Over the last few days a succession of leaks and hints have hit the gadget rumor mill, again leading us to believe that an announcement could be just days away.

Last Wednesday, a screenshot of Verizon's internal system on AndroidForums listed more than 150,000 HTC INC ADR6300 handsets as "on order." According to the image, the phones are in a Verizon Wireless warehouse, prepped for retail.

After what must seem like an eternity to Motorola Droid owners, Android 2.1 could start rolling out to handsets this afternoon. That is, of course, provided you believe the Engadget report from today.

The site got its hands on an internal Verizon e-mail that was sent out early this morning, and, from what we can tell, all signs point to it being legitimate. We've asked Verizon for confirmation and will let you know when we have a reply.

It's no secret that a Verizon-compatible Nexus One exists; the question now is when will it be available. Unfortunately, we didn't hear anything official at CTIA 2010 and the previously reported March 23 launch has obviously come and gone. So now what?

Rumor: 'iAd' mobile ad platform is Apple's next big thing

MediaPost reports that Apple's next next big thing, after iPads invade the world next weekend, will be iAd, a mobile advertising platform to be debuted April 7. Coffee dates and patent suits aside, this could be the true Apple-Google battleground.

Of course, if you've been reading the tea leaves, Apple's move into mobile advertising is anything but surprising. In January, they bought mobile advertising company Quattro for a reported $275 million, after Google snatched AdMob out from under them months before.

LAS VEGAS--Samsung and Sprint continue to jostle for the spotlight on the second day of CTIA 2010. Sprint and HTC deserve a lot of attention for launching the Evo 4G, but Samsung is holding its own with its new Galaxy S. Apple to join the geolocation craze?

Looks like Apple may be the latest to succumb to the geomadness gripping the mobile-development space right now.

Patently Apple dug up an Apple patent application Thursday for a social-networking service called iGroups that uses geographic location data to connect iPhone and other mobile-device users.

iGroups would let friend groups attending an event to stay in touch and share information in real time.
