Announced on Friday, the "Black Edition" of the handsets uses a dark black front and a faux leather rear cover that echoes the design of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3. Just keep in mind that the changes are cosmetic only, and Samsung has left the phone's internals alone.
We appear to be ticking down to the inevitable release of the next Samsung flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S5. That means we first have to wade through a froth of rumors well before the actual product ever gets announced (likely in March or April). When it comes to the S5, there are some fun possibilities on the table.
One suggestion is that there will be two versions, a plastic-body version and a premium metal-body version. That's potentially good news for fans of metal phones who like the durability.
Another interesting upgrade would be the rumored rapid-charging battery. Smartphone battery life is a big recurring complaint these days. If this rumor pans out, the S5 would have a 20 percent greater capacity in the same footprint as its predecessor, and it would also charge up in less than two hours.… Read more
Let's face it, Motorola's freshest crop of smartphones is pretty impressive, but still misses the mark. Even with Google's vast financial resources and software know-how, Moto devices haven't exactly sold like hotcakes. Now that Google has decided to hand off Motorola Mobility into the eager palms of Chinese hardware giant Lenovo, Moto could enjoy a much-needed course correction. … Read more
Earlier this week LG confirmed that the G Pro 2 will make its debut in February. Presumably launching at Mobile World Congress in late February, there's little else to know about the smartphone...officially.
Thanks to a pair of leaked images out of Korean Web site DC Inside (requires translation), we have a general idea as to what the G Pro 2 looks like.
Indeed, LG has again opted for the rear-mounted button configuration we first saw in the LG G2. The photos obtained by the site show a white handset with chrome accents, but we'll probably get … Read more
It's no overstatement to say that the Motorola Moto X was among the best phones of 2013, offering lots of cool features and a customizable design. It won raves from critics and users alike.
And now it's on sale: You can get an unlocked, no-contract Moto X (16GB) for $329.99 shipped or the 32GB version for $379.99 -- a savings of $70. (Note that you won't see either price until you get to checkout and select the "GSM unlocked," Sprint, or Verizon option.)
The big fun of the Moto X, of course, is … Read more
You don't have to look far to see evidence that the world of successful, high-end smartphone makers is shrinking to two major contenders -- Apple and Samsung -- while other important brands, like BlackBerry, HTC, and Nokia, have faded in prominence or struggle to compete.
Still, like ground cover beneath a canopy of trees, smaller or less well-known brands have a chance to grow, even thrive, in emerging markets.
Lenovo is picking up steam in China, the most important growth market there is; and even on the brink of extinction, BlackBerry phones are still selling throughout Africa, South America, … Read more
According to recent chatter, the Samsung Galaxy S5 is rumored to debut with a 2,560x1,440-pixel AMOLED display.
At a upward of 560 pixels per inch, this "2K" resolution is unlike anything we've seen from Samsung. But as terrific as this sounds on paper, it pales in comparison to what's around the corner. Strap in, kids, Samsung's already working on an AMOLED UHD display capable of 3,480x2,160 pixels. In other words: 4K smartphones.
Nokia likely will aim its much-rumored Android phone at budget-conscious consumers, at least based on its reported specs.
In a tweet posted Tuesday, leaker @evleaks revealed the alleged, major features for the Nokia X, which goes by the codename Normandy. Assuming the information is accurate, and @evleaks usually is reliable, the phone will offer a dual-core 1GHz Snapdragon processor, a 4-inch WVGA screen, 512MB of memory, 4GB of storage, and a microSD card slot.
Available in a choice of six colors, Normany will include a 5MP camera, a 1,500mAh battery, and a dual-SIM setup, according to @evleaks. One other … Read more
AT&T subscribers who own the HTC One X should get ready for a dose of Android 4.2.2.
In a message tweeted late Monday, an HTC executive said that AT&T has approved Android 4.2.2 for the HTC One X and aims to launch the over-the-air update on Wednesday.
The regular HTC One is on the path toward receiving Android 4.4.2 KitKat. On Monday, HTC's Software Updates page showed its flagship phone as being certified by all four major US carriers -- AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon. The update … Read more
Samsung thinks the Touch ID feature in the iPhone 5S is a pretty nifty idea worth including in its upcoming Galaxy S5, if a note from a Chinese analyst with a pretty solid track record of predicting upcoming smartphone features (including Touch ID) turns out to be accurate.
