Media player meets Netbook in the Archos 9PCtablet

The line between portable media devices and traditional Netbooks just got a little more blurred, thanks to this morning's announcement of the Archos 9PCtablet. According to the company, this is a 9-inch touchscreen Atom-powered PC, in a form factor much closer to Archos' line of portable media players (or older UMPCs) than, say, an Eee PC.

Using a touchscreen interface and an optical trackball, the Archos 9PCtablet looks at first glance like a Netbook that's had its screen and keyboard halves forcibly separated. Probably the closest thing we've seen recently is the import-only Viliv S5, which also had an Atom processor and a touch screen -- but that display was only 4.8 inches.

The Archos 9 won't be out until fall, so the company is wisely sticking with Windows 7 as its operating system choice. Taking a look at the rest of the specs, it seems very Netbook-like, although it has the new 1.2GHz Z515 version of Intel's Atom processer, specifically designed for Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs). We'll have to wait and see how that stacks up against the much more common 1.6GHz N270 version of that chip found in the vast majority of Netbooks.

Archos teases new touch PMP

With about as much fanfare as a prison release, a new Archos touch-screen MP3 player made an appearance on the manufacturer's Web site this morning, along with a handful of product specs.

The product page shows off a new pocket-size MP3 player called the Archos 3, featuring a 3-inch, color, touch screen, 8GB of storage, photo playback, a voice recorder, a calendar, a stopwatch, and 14 hours of battery life.

Archos isn't saying when we'll see the Archos 3, how much it will cost, what kind of files it can play, or really giving any indication why … Read more

Archos 2 MP3 player outed on Amazon

Details on a forthcoming MP3 player from Archos named the Archos 2 have been revealed on Amazon.com. Though there's nothing revolutionary about the specs of the Archos 2, the $59 price tag (8GB) may be enough to have you overlooking its mediocrity. Basically, this is a budget MP3 player that emulates the candy bar designs and portrait-style screen orientations of the Apple iPod Nano and Microsoft Zune. The Archos 2 features a 1.8-inch color screen, and includes music playback (MP3, WMA), a photo viewer, video playback (AVI), and voice-recording capabilities. There's no FM radio, however, which … Read more

Archos 10-inch Netbook

Archos, a popular maker of Portable Media Players and Mobile Internet Devices, is joining the Netbook fray by releasing one of its own.

Earlier this week, the company announced the availability of its new 10-inch Netbook on its online store. The Netbook was originally slated for release in April, but because it was announced at CES in January, I guess the company felt ready for prime time. Finally, Archos is said to be working on several new versions based on Intel's Moorestown platform, which will replace Intel's current Netbook and MID platform sometime in 2010.

For now, let'… Read more
