Dozens charged in use of Zeus Trojan to steal $3 million

The FBI and the U.S. Attorney's office in southern New York announced charges today against 37 people accused of being part of an international crime ring that stole $3 million from bank accounts by infecting computers with the Zeus Trojan and other malware.

Between federal and state charges, more than 60 people total are being charged in the operation, officials said.

Ten people were arrested today by federal and New York law enforcement officers and another 10 were previously arrested in the U.S. as part of a coordinated takedown, authorities said. Seventeen people are still being sought … Read more

U.K. police arrest 19 Zeus online fraud suspects

Nineteen people have been arrested in the U.K. for their alleged involvement in a fraud ring that stole millions of pounds from U.K. bank accounts.

London's Metropolitan Police Central eCrime Unit said the 15 men and 4 women, who were arrested yesterday in London, are suspected of using the Zeus data-stealing Trojan to capture log-in details and gain access to online bank accounts. The gang allegedly stole about 6 million pounds ($9.5 million) in a three-month period from U.K. banks.

Police were alerted to the gang's alleged activities by the Virtual Taskforce, a group … Read more

AT&T hacker released on bail after drug arrest

A hacker involved in the disclosure of a security flaw in an AT&T iPad-related Web site was released from an Arkansas jail Thursday after posting a $3,160 bond on felony drug possession charges, authorities said.

Andrew Auernheimer, 24, was arrested Tuesday after officials searching his Fayetteville, Ark., home on an FBI search warrant said they found less than a gram of cocaine, one ecstasy pill, 19 tabs of LSD, and some Oxycodone. They also allegedly found a different pharmaceutical classified as schedule 3, which makes it a misdemeanor.

FBI officials would not say whether or not the … Read more

Webbys highlight convergence of digital culture, comedy

NEW YORK--Actor B.J. Novak, host of the 14th Annual Webby Awards on Monday night, was--much like his character on sitcom "The Office"--a little too smarmy for his own good.

"This year, The New York Times is a big winner!" Novak said of the storied media establishment in his opening monologue at the Webbys, a somewhat tongue-in-cheek presentation of Slinky-shaped trophies to both judge- and audience-selected winners in innumerable categories. "The New York Times, accepting an award from the Internet, the very thing that threatened to destroy it! Who knows, maybe next year the … Read more

The 404 557: Where we just add water (podcast)

Wilson's taking a three-day weekend to recuperate from last week's Apple madness, so Natali takes his place to kick off this week of Apple-free episodes...not. Just when you thought Apple would let someone else have the news spotlight, out comes Stop the Madness Steve Jobs, an open letter written by developer Jack Freeman about Apple recently changing the requirements in the iPhone OS terms of service, limiting the programming languages developers can use to create applications.

According to the letter, "these new terms will shut down many current developers, and disallow many popular game engines and other "middlewares." The article also pleads with Jobs to filter the current app store based on quality of the end product instead of the programming methods. There's no petition to sign, but Jack encourages all supportive developers to comment on the letter and forward it to friends!

Meanwhile, in Droid country, a YouTube channel called DROIDshortcuts is showing off codes that let you use the phone to access very "special" features including changing traffic lights and improving your billiards game.

The most controversial app lets you detect a woman's bra size with a simple swipe of the handset. The video demo posted shows a couple guys walking into a "random" bar and asking the bartender's permission to "scan" her female parts with the Droid, although we're pretty sure this is old technology--version 1.0 didn't even need a phone; it was just called using your eyes.

Finally, we have some bad news for fans of "Arrested Development"--the much-discussed movie adaptation might actually be dead in the water, or at least that's what star David Cross recently said to a reporter, claiming too much time has passed since the series finale. It's not an official death sentence, so we'll just have to assume that the movie would've been a crappy, stretched-out version of the series anyway. Hopefully.

Spain arrests three accused of running huge botnet

Authorities in Spain have arrested three men accused of operating a massive botnet composed of 12.7 million PCs that stole credit card and bank log-in data and infected computers in half of the Fortune 1,000 companies and more than 40 banks, according to published reports.

The botnet "Mariposa," which means butterfly in Spanish, first appeared in December 2008 and grew to be one of the largest botnets ever, The Associated Press reported. It spread the Butterfly worm via removable drives, MSN Messenger, and peer-to-peer programs and targets Windows XP and older systems.

The 404 Podcast 502: Where we give Jill 'three and a half mice' and 'Two and a Half Men'

Jill Schlesinger joins the show today after a few months with her presence. A lot has changed since then, we got stickers, the U.S. Senate has 59 Democrats, and now ABC is doing promos for CNET.com. (The 404 Podcast and CNET are owned by CBS.)

Yep, you read that right. On the ABC show "Modern Family", Phil and Clair Dunphy argue about a new universal remote control, and in the course of talking about being a male cheerleader, Phil mentions that CNET gave the remote a smokin' hot "three and a half mice." Unfortunately, we switched from numbers to stars rather than mice. Jeff and Jill think it's the new "Arrested Development" on Fox plus "The Office" on NBC.

Speaking of NBC, Jill weighs in on the whole Jay Leno and Conan O'Brien debacle. She wishes she could get paid 40 million dollars not to work, but we're glad to see Conan sticking up for his staff.

Finally, Jill offers some good financial advice this year. It's tax season, and she recommends that you readjust your tax withholding because you're essentially giving the government an interest-free loan for a whole year. Otherwise, whip out a 1040EZ, a glass of scotch and just do your taxes. It ain't that hard.

The 404 Podcast 498: Where Jeff battles the Triad

We love getting (scheduled) visits from fans of The 404, especially when they come with treats for us! Henry Chu, aka Charlie Chu, aka Tapchus in the chat room, stopped by this morning to pick up some stickers and ended up joining us in the studio for the first segment of the show. If you're watching the video, that's Henry taking some flicks of the CNET podcast studio. Be sure to send us those pictures, Henry, and thanks for the delicious pastries!

Plenty of stories to talk about today, including a kooky wedding stunt courtesy of Gizmodo. Instead of a traditional flower girl, an S.F. bride commissioned her robot-crazed sister to build a flower-bearing bot instead! We're all nerds here, but unfortunately Jeff tells us that there will be no robots in attendance at his wedding in October 2010.

Next up, we have some very exciting news, albeit three years too late, about the "Arrested Development" movie starting to unfold. The movie starts production this year, and despite rumors about Michael Cera, the entire cast will reprise their roles in the movie. Can't wait!

If you were ever a fan of the Mega Man series, get ready for Mega Man 10! We take a special look at Mega Man's eight new enemies (with eight painfully uncreative names, like Sheep Man) in the downloadable title, available for all three platforms this March.

If convicted, Sanchez faces up to three years in prison and a $250,000 … Read more

Craigslist ad smokes alleged pot deal

It's time for a test. Is there anyone out there who is not familiar with the term "420"?

For those who may have been on a secret government mission to confirm Pluto's existence, legend has it, or at least one of the legends, that referring to pot as "420" started in San Rafael, Calif., where a group of schoolkids met to puff after school ended--which was 4:20 p.m.

Anyway, there seems to be a man in Quincy, Mass., who may not have thought that the police might be familiar with the term.… Read more
