Link up with business associates

LinkedIn for iPad doesn't have all the features you'd find on the business-oriented networking Web site, but a nice layout and new integration with your calendar make it a worthy download.

Formerly just on smaller devices like iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, and Palm Pre, the new LinkedIn app for iPad has some interesting functionality built in that lets you map out your busy workday.

Upon launch, you can browse three categories: All Updates, You, and your Inbox. Touch You and you can see who has viewed your profile, people you may know (through your connections) and all your current … Read more

Nokia Lumia 900 irks users by not connecting to the Web

A lot of hype and eager anticipation surrounded the release of Nokia's Lumia 900 smartphone yesterday. People debated whether to ditch their iPhones in lieu of this cheaper yet still high-end featured mobile device.

However, it seems this latest Windows Phone is off to a rocky start -- several owners of the 900s report that their new devices aren't connecting to AT&T's data networks.

"Got my new lumia 900 yesterday from at&t, everything's fine EXCEPT THE WEB," wrote one user on Nokia's Support Discussions. "Any 1 has the … Read more

Cisco launches app-enabled router

While Netgear and D-Link introduced their approaches to app-supporting and cloud-enabled networking products at CES 2012, Cisco, which didn't have anything to announce at CES, turns out to be the first to materialize the new concepts.

Cisco today unveiled a line of Linksys Smart Wi-Fi routers that promises to change the face, and the body, of home networking.

The Linksys EA4500, EA3500, and EA2700 -- the "A" designation being short for "app-enabled" -- look like models in the earlier E Series but have more-powerful hardware and support Cisco Connect Cloud, the next generation of Cisco … Read more

How to fix Wi-Fi issues on the new iPad

The problem is a simple one to encounter. You should have Wi-Fi but for some reason the reception just isn't there. That's exactly what struck OS X Daily, just after it got a new iPad from Apple.

And the guys from OS X Daily are not alone. Threads on support sites including the Apple Support Communities report the same issue, where Wi-Fi is not able to connect during setup. If your experience is similar to either case, there are quite a few trick to try before demanding a refund or writing Tim Cook.

The solution, according to OS … Read more

Secrets of the iPad Camera Connection Kit

With the third-generation iPad's super-high-resolution Retina Display and the newly available iPhoto for iOS, editing photos and videos on the go is becoming more practical.

Specifically tailored for the iPad, Apple's proprietary Camera Connection Kit allows you to transfer full-resolution photos and videos from your digital camera to your iPad without the need for a computer.

The $29 kit comes with two components: a USB adapter and an SD card adapter. Like its name implies, the intended use of these adapters is to transfer media from your camera to your iPad. But after a little tinkering, it's … Read more

New iPad 4G real-world speed test: You're the winner

Despite its mundane and nondescriptive name, the new iPad (third generation) is actually the first 4G device from Apple.

The iPhone 4S and the iPhone 4 are both 3G devices. The fact that iOS 5.1 makes AT&T's iPhone 4S show a 4G signal only makes it more confusing, and now you probably don't know what 4G is anymore.

I do, however. How, you might ask? Well, it's simple: 4G is fast, and putting a Ferrari logo on your Honda Civic won't make it a racing car. No offense to the Civic; it's great on gas, but it's speed we're talking about here. So let me say this once again: the new iPad is the first 4G device from Apple.

A couple of months ago, I had a chance to roam around San Francisco with the new iPhone 4S from all supported carriers and found that none offered cellular Internet speeds even close to those of the slowest 4G device. Now, I just did the same thing with the new iPad, both AT&T and Verizon versions, and it was quite the opposite story. … Read more

ARM looks to refrigerators, medical devices with new chip

With the smartphone and tablet markets firmly in its grasps, ARM Holdings is looking elsewhere to capitalize on its growth.

The chip designer yesterday announced its new ARM Cortex-M0+ processor. The chip is designed for intelligent sensors and smart control systems in a host of markets, including home appliances, medical monitoring, and motor-control devices.

The secret to the Cortex-M0+'s market appeal is its energy-efficiency, ARM says. The company is calling the chip "the world's most energy-efficient microprocessor," consuming just one-third of the energy of any 8- or 16-bit processor. However, ARM claims the processor can deliver … Read more

Verizon doubling 4G LTE sites by the end of 2012

Verizon Wireless is poised to reach many more Americans this year with its 4G LTE service.

Speaking to Dow Jones Newswires in an interview published yesterday, Verizon Chief Technical Officer David Small said that the company will have "at least 400 markets" equipped with 4G LTE by the end of the year. Verizon currently has about 200 sites around the U.S. covering 200 million Americans. With the new rollout, the company hopes to have 260 million Americans covered.

If Verizon can pull that off, it'll put the company far ahead of its chief competitor, AT&… Read more
