Mazda mirror tries to end blind spots

Mazda says it's come up with a car technology that's the closest thing to having eyes in the back of your head. The "Back Up Camera with Auto-Dimming Mirror Display" promises to do precisely what the prosaic name indicates: Its rear-view mirror has an LCD screen that appears only when the car is in reverse, otherwise concealed by a special coating (called "transflective," whatever that means).

The idea is to eliminate blind spots with a built-in camera that sends a live feed to the 2.4-inch screen embedded in the mirror, which will be … Read more

This keyboard helps apply makeup

We felt that something had been amiss lately, and it finally dawned on us: It's been days since we've blogged about a pink gadget. But this one more than makes up for our dereliction of duty, if we do say so ourselves: the multimedia "Girls" keyboard.

All of the keyboards made by Greybusters are colorful, to say the least, but this one seems over the top even by the company's own garish standards. And not just because it's shocking pink from A to Z--as Chip Chick points out, it's also got a vanity mirrorRead more

LED mirror isn't as bad as it sounds

LEDs are beginning to rival Swarovski crystals as overused (and unnecessary) accents for all manner of products--even handbags. They appear so often that we could even start a daily feature on them.

So for today's installment of Crave, The LED Edition, we be bring you into the home. The "Diamond Lite" mirror, from the UK's BC Designs, is a backlit, splash-proof accessory punctuated with small diamond-shaped LED clusters. But, unlike so the garish designs of so many other items we've seen, this one is actually done in a tasteful manner, as Gadget Candy says. Then … Read more

Talking mirror melds security, fairy tale

Mirror, mirror on the wall, what's the wackiest home-networking gadget of all? The "Magic Message Mirror" by California-based Themeaddicts would certainly have to be up there. It looks and functions like a decorative wall mirror, but hook it up to a home security system and it verbally provides real-time information about people walking up the driveway, entering the yard, doing a jig on the front lawn and so on.

The device, created by Hollywood special-effects expert Craig Barr, will also theatrically reveal an integrated live camera feed to show the area that's being monitored.

Verbal information … Read more

Netgear Storage Central, round two

At a CES 2007 press conference this morning, Netgear announced the second iteration of its Storage Central device, the Storage Central Turbo (SC101T). As its name implies, it's faster than its predecessor, because of a Gigabit Ethernet connection. It still comes with two empty drive bays, into which you can install Serial ATA hard drives from any vendor and of any capacity. Conceivably, with Seagate's expected 1TB, 3.5-inch drives, you could easily have a 2TB SAN box on your network at a fraction of what you'd pay for a 2TB external drive. The two-drive setup allows … Read more

Radiator disguises itself as a mirror

We weren't terribly fond of the LED mirror we spied recently, mostly because we thought its scrolling messages might deliver insults about our lifestyle. But just to prove that we don't have anything against such objects, we wholly endorse this combination mirror, radiator and digital clock from Italy's Tubor, a heating device and technology specialist. (Who knew Italy had such stuff?)

Behind the reflective surface is a stainless steel facade that ingeniously hides an electric or water radiator. We liked this item not only for its practicality but also for the black, monolithic design that Trendir accurately … Read more

LED mirror can bug you all day

We're just as tired of LED products as you are, but this one is worth mentioning.

This mirror can show up to 4,000 characters that can scroll personalized messages displayed in different fonts and effects of your choosing, such as "Put down that cigarette" or "No doughnuts today." And you pay just $585 for the privilege of reading them all day.

On second thought, maybe this wasn't worth mentioning after all.

Time to watch TV? Turn on the mirror

Consider this an update to the old Hollywood cliche of the wall safe hidden behind a painting. The difference is that, instead of family heirlooms and Krugerrands, the treasure is your television set.

Media Decor, which brought us the "HideandChic" art-over-TV disguise, has released a two-way "Media-Mirror" that conceals your flat-screen TV. If we understand the way it works (always a dangerous proposition), the framed mirror doesn't slide away to reveal the television; instead, its reflection essentially disappears when the TV behind it is turned on by remote control. It's able to do this … Read more

Music to shave by, in the shower

This item could be accused of having dubious practicality, but at least it makes more sense than the recently posted shower cam. The fogless mirror from Discovery can pick up tunes from your MP3 device through an FM transmitter and play them on its waterproof speakers. It has a range of 100 feet, so your iPod can stay safe and dry in the next room.

Now if you had a decent pair of regular speakers, you could probably crank up the volume enough to hear them over the running water. Then you could just get a fog-free mirror for less … Read more
