Photo Caption Pro Extreme adds custom captions

It's hard to surf the Web without encountering a new meme, whether it be a grumpy cat or a cute baby. Photo Caption Pro Extreme lets you apply custom captions to your pictures so that maybe yours will be the next Internet sensation. We weren't big fans of all the pop-up ads, but it performed as promised.

Photo Caption Pro Extreme opens with two menu options: take a photo or choose one from your iPhone's Camera Roll. We started with a photo from our Camera Roll. Two pop-up ads appeared after our selection, but we were able … Read more

Mac sales should recover after December drop, analyst says

Sales of Apple's Mac should bounce back this month following a dismal December, according to Needham analyst Charlie Wolf.

For 26 quarters in a row, Mac shipments grew faster than those of PCs. But that record came to an end in December when Mac shipments fell by 22 percent compared with an overall industry drop of just 6.6 percent.

Wolf said in an investors note released today:

What we can only describe as astonishing, given that Mac shipments fell below PC shipment growth in all geographic regions and segments in December, is that there was absolutely not one … Read more

Save streaming videos from YouTube directly on your hard drive

Saving videos directly from YouTube to your hard drive is a widely asked-for feature. One of the possible candidates to satisfy this demand is YouTube Video Downloader Pro. However, even though the thought of saving videos from YouTube directly to your computer with an integrated and seamless procedure seems attractive, this software doesn't deliver.

If you have found YouTube Downloader Pro while searching for the perfect solution, we advise against trying it. The installer asks for permission to change your default home page as well as your search engine. If you opt out of this, which you probably should, … Read more

Get a ball's-eye view with camera in football

Do you really have enough camera angles when you watch a football game? Come on, you want more.

Feed your desire to be omnipresent with the wacky BallCam. It puts a camera inside the spinning football.

You'd think that would make you toss that mix of pizza, hotdogs, and beer in your stomach, but boffins at Carnegie Mellon University and Japan's University of Electro-Communications have made it a rather pleasant viewing experience.

CMU researcher Kris Kitani and UEM's Kodai Horita co-authored a paper on how algorithms in their prototype football can recognize footage of the ground as … Read more

Analyst: Google's Chromebook Pixel succeeds on image

Google had already achieved a measure of success with the Chromebook Pixel, according to an analyst at Gap Intelligence.

"[It's] a fantastic ploy to get people to think about Chrome differently," said Deron Kershaw, an analyst Gap Intelligence who follows retail sales of laptops.

The Pixel is now being sold by Best Buy at a starting price of $1,299.

Kershaw continued. "In addition to drawing a line in the sand with Apple on touch, they're trying to craft the sense that premium hardware and a web-centric OS aren't incompatible with each other. And … Read more

Pretend you are speeding things up on your Android smartphone

Surfing on Wi-Fi isn't just better than using your phone's limited data plan -- it's faster, too. However, some speed demons want to make things even faster when they're browsing the Web. Wi-Fi Booster Pro V2 makes you think it will do that, but you won't see any improvement. You will notice the invasive permissions it asks for, though.

In the app's fine print, it claims to be a placebo. Immediately upon installation, the app demands to install ads all over your phone without an easy way to opt out. To get rid of … Read more

The incredible, unscalable screen of the Chromebook Pixel

As a MacBook Pro Retina user, I can attest that Google's Chromebook Pixel rivals the quality of Apple's Retina display. But the Chromebook falls short in not allowing you to sacrifice some quality in favor of seeing more on your display.

Based on the tech specs floating out there, you might be forgiven in thinking that both the MacBook Retina and the Chromebook Pixel have similar screens. After all, Apple talks about the 13-inch Retina having "spectacular" 2,560x1,600 resolution, while Google cites the Chromebook Pixel having a 2,560x1,700 screen.

Display resolution versus … Read more
