It's not as nimble as the Kia Soul and its quirky looks have been outweirded by the Nissan Cube, but there's something about the 2011 Scion xB that merits a second look. Maybe it's the crazy paint on our Release Series 8.0 tester, maybe it's finally been around long enough to distance itself from the first-generation Scion xB in my mind, but the second-generation xB is starting to grow on me; I think that I'm starting to like it.
Windows 8 could be released to manufacturing by April, according to a "not so crazy" rumor offered by Mary Jo Foley of CNET sister site ZDNet.
In her column yesterday, Foley cited a "trusted source," who says that Microsoft is currently on track for Windows 8 to be released to manufacturing by April. RTM, or release to manufacturing, is the final version of a product just before it reaches consumers. For example, Windows 7 was released to manufacturing in July 2009 and then officially launched a few months later in October.
According to Foley's source, … Read more
Scion likes to attract attention to its brand with yearly Release Series special editions of its tC, xB, and xD models. Usually, that means a fresh coat of exclusive paint, color-matched interior trim, a set of nice wheels, and a body kit, but the upcoming Scion tC Release Series 7.0 also gets some new cabin tech.
Let's start with the standard-fare Release Series upgrades. In addition to the retina-searing High Voltage yellow paint, this limited-edition tC also gets 18-inch gloss black alloy rims and a Toyota Racing Development (TRD) five-piece body kit that adds a honeycomb lower grille … Read more
What exactly is Firefox for?
With a new Mozilla chief executive, a new six-week rapid-release cycle, and new Firefox management, apparently the organization has concluded there's no time like the present to pin down an answer.
"Now that we have a solid base to work from, and greatly improved agility, it's a good time to look at the quickly-evolving landscape and chart our path forward," Jay Sullivan, Mozilla's vice president of product, said in a mailing list message on Friday. "To that end, I've tried to synthesize and distill countless discussions and ideas … Read more
Last week, Mozilla programmers and executives were jubilant when the release of Firefox 5 marked the successful transition to a more competitive rapid-release development cycle.
Now, with a backlash from corporations and others who aren't equipped to handle that pace of change, things aren't quite so sunny. The organization and its community of supporters have begun some soul-searching about how to reconcile the conflicting priorities--developing software quickly but not leaving users behind.
Mozilla has concluded that Firefox isn't for corporations whose Web use doesn't move at the speed of today's Web, though. That decision frees … Read more
Enterprise deployments have never been a key market for Firefox, Mozilla's director of the browser, Asa Dotzler, has said.
Dotzler's comments were made yesterday, in response to criticism from IT managers who said the newly accelerated Firefox release schedule was causing problems for businesses trying to keep up with the rapid pace of the browser's development. Firefox 5 launched on Wednesday, just three months after the release of Firefox 4.
"We get about 2 million Firefox downloads per day from regular user types," Dotzler wrote, describing enterprise downloads as "really just a drop in … Read more
Scion has had a funny reception during its short history. Intended as a car for the young and ultrahip, it ended up being quite popular with baby boomers as well; whoops! But that's another story. In the video at hand, we take a look at the Scion xB Release Series for 2011, which is most certainly not a car with a lot of cross-generational appeal (though the Smurfs are eating it up). Brian Cooley takes you for a drive to check the tech.Read CNET's review of the 2011 Scion xB.
Forget the rumors of an iPhone 4S coming this fall. In fact, you may be able to forget an iPhone 4S entirely. Word on the street from Boy Genius Report is that the iPhone 5 is coming.
Apple has been rumored to be testing iPhone 4 (or 4S) models for T-Mobile and Sprint lately, causing many to conjecture that an iPhone 4S release this fall is entirely possible (with a full iPhone 5 release in January). BGR, however, "has independently confirmed that the next-generation iPhone will not merely be an upgraded iPhone 4 as had been previously rumored."… Read more
Back in 1959 "Ben-Hur" won 11 Academy Awards, including Best Motion Picture, Best Actor, and Best Director. You'd figure a movie like that would be out on Blu-ray, but it has remained on our "Top 30 movies not out on Blu-ray" list for the last couple of years.
That's about to change, as Warner Bros. has announced that "Ben-Hur" will make its debut on Blu-ray on September 27 as the "Ben-Hur 50th Anniversary Ultimate Collector's Edition."
Although it's only been around for three months, don't get too comfortable with Firefox 4.
Today, Mozilla has updated the Firefox 5 beta to release candidate status (download for Windows | Mac | Linux), which includes improves support for "future-Web" technology, speeds up the browser, and makes multiple smaller tweaks to the browser.
Following the path cut by Google with Chrome's rapid-release program, the changes to Firefox 5 are several orders of magnitude smaller than those made in Firefox 4 yet are not insignificant. Most importantly, Firefox 5 release candidate makes multiple under-the-hood tweaks to improve performance. … Read more
