Latest iPhone jailbreaks could work on iPad, too

Attention, jailbreak fans: two competing tools might be released in the next couple of days to jailbreak iPhones running 3.1.3--and they might also work on the iPad, which launches Saturday.

Jailbreaking is the practice of hacking an iPhone or iPod Touch to install non-Apple-approved programs and run system hacks. It allows for things like tethering, interface tweaks, and other changes Apple doesn't approve of. Many people don't like being locked in to the "ecosystem" Apple forces its iDevice users to inhabit, and jailbreaking is seen as the cure.

The hacks have been demonstrated and … Read more

Touchfrastructure meets the HypePad

by Fabio Sergio, Creative Director, frog design

Those who know me will tell you that I tend to reflect on things, but the sad truth is that my brain is simply slow: here I am, writing about the iPad months after everybody else has put the microscope down and decided to wait for the thing to finally hit the market for real.

From my vantage point of nonengagement I must admit it was oddly amusing to see Apple for once unable to safely ride out the centrifugal mammoth hype tube they managed once more to build around their latest … Read more

Buzz Report: The fudging iPad fudging comes out

I have the pleasure of filling in for Molly Wood on the Buzz Report this week, and I have to say I really enjoyed it. Of course we talk about the iPad. There's no avoiding it. But we also touch on a video game vest that lets you feel bullets and stabbings, a t-shirt for your email, and children put on a presentation of Scarface. Oh and new iPhone rumours!

Buzz Out Loud 1197: Where this episode is no joke (podcast)

Once again this year, we've had it with April Fool's jokes. Except for one. You'll see. If you're more tired of iPad than you are of April Fool's, skip the first half of the show where we recap other people's reviews since Apple refuses to give us an iPad early. Also, we debunk Microsoft's claims that Chrome is fundamentally insecure, which almost ought to be a joke.

Analyst: Amazon should cut Kindle price for iPad launch

Although Amazon's Kindle is enjoying strong sales, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster told Barrons in a recent interview that the company needs to cut the price of its e-reader if it wants to compete with the iPad.

According to Barrons, Munster told the publication that Amazon should cut the price of the Kindle from its current $259 price tag to $149. Munster believes that the iPad could cut into Amazon's Kindle sales without a price reduction.

As troubling as that might be for Amazon, Munster contends that the e-retailer is in a good position, regardless of the way … Read more

Core of original Apple tablet lives on in iPhone, iPad

In tearing down the original Apple tablet, iFixit demonstrates that more than a decade later, a core piece of Newton technology lives on in the iPhone and iPad .

At the heart of the iPad is Apple's A4 processor, which is based on core technology from United Kingdom-based ARM. Ditto for the ARM-based iPhone. More than 15 years earlier, in 1993, the Apple MessagePad, aka Newton, also used an ARM chip. By 1997, the Newton design had evolved into the MessagePad 2000 with a StrongARM chip from Digital Equipment Corp. (DEC).

And ARM has been a stunning success, as evidenced … Read more

Which e-readers will the iPad crush?

Now that the iPad is upon us and the reviews have started coming in, it's becoming clear that the iPad is an excellent e-reader, perhaps the best one out there. This isn't exactly a great surprise. The fact is that ever since we had an inkling that Apple would come out with a slate-style device that resembled a giant iPod Touch, we knew that it would have a profound impact on the e-book reader world. We always figured there would be a before and after shot of the market--and it wouldn't be pretty for certain companies that … Read more

Top 30 iPad games we'd like to see

The iPad may not have a built-in camera, multitasking capabilities, or support for Flash, but it does have a 9.7-inch high-resolution touch screen and a faster processor than an iPhone 3GS. Though most games for the iPhone and iPod Touch should run on the iPad, many developers are rapidly creating updated "HD" versions of their existing games to take advantage of the device's improved resolution and slightly altered layout.

From the first moment the iPad was announced, we started imagining which games could benefit most from going XL Apple-style. Of course, it remains to be seen … Read more

Buzz Out Loud 1196: Schrodinger's iPad (podcast)

We talk a bit about the iPad and Rafe reveals that his iPad is in quantum indeterminacy. He has it reserved but he hasn't paid for it. And he won't know until the last minute whether he's going to buy it. Meanwhile the Google-Apple war heats up on the Flash and the tablet front. And Facebook leaks email all over the place. Ew.
