LG.Philips plans supersized touch screens

LG.Philips, one of the major worldwide LCD panel suppliers, is planning to debut a series of mammoth touch screens, including two so-called world-first commercial flat panels: a 52-inch multi-touch and a 47-inch triple-view HDTV.

The former has an ultra-high 1,920x1,080 resolution and the ability to recognize two touch points, as well as gestures. Its high responsiveness is also capable of picking up more exacting writing instruments, thereby improving interactivity.

The HDTV, meanwhile, can display three images to viewers standing at various angles simultaneously. It's intended for such uses as in-store directories and shopping mall advertising.

The response to my post last week about how to convert digital photo collections to DVD slide shows was a resounding, "Whatever. How can I grab a screenshot from a video or DVD?"

Who knew that the number of would-be "screencappers" was so legion? Regardless, I'm your humble servant, and your wish is generally my command.

Hard drives join touch-screen bandwagon too

As if Apple and others aren't already turning everything into touch screens, now we have one popping up on one of the most unlikely of places: an external hard drive.

Perhaps indicated by a name that appears to be encrypted itself, Iotek's "ezSECU ez850" has a touch screen that serves as a digital combination lock with a secret code, according to OhGizmo. Nokia's touch-screen idea--from 2006

Nokia will have touch-screen mobile phones in the future--that much we know from its announcement recently about S60 (Symbian Series60) handsets supporting touch-sensitive displays. What is less known, however, is that the Finnish giant had filed patent documents for such phones dating back to May 2006.

In the document discovered by Unwired View on the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office site, Nokia envisioned a device with two screens to display different kinds of information depending on the angle at which the clamshell is opened. Control of the device is possible using either the buttons or the display.

Jing Project: Easiest emergency screen captures

As a faithful corporate blogger, I take a lot of screenshots. I've mentioned that in previous roundups of screen capture apps. When I found myself at the Under the Radar conference yesterday (see all posts) without a handy screen capture installed, I quickly downloaded Jing Project, for Windows and Mac.

You would think the iPhone's touch screen--the hallmark of the whole dang thing--would last for more than five months. Well, think again.

MONTEREY, Calif.--Here's an entertaining gimmick that looks as if it's from a company called FogScreen.

At the 6Sight digital-imaging show here Thursday, the Portola Plaza Hotel had a machine producing a thin, downwardly flowing curtain of fog backlit with a digital projector.

It was kind of hypnotic to watch the swirling psychedelic graphics, and it was just the thing to kill time while waiting for the audience to sift into the auditorium.
