What the iPhone commercials tell us

Apple iPhone watchers breathed a collective sigh of relief yesterday when TV commercials shown during 60 Minutes revealed the June 29 release date at long last. From our perspective we don't know what's better--finally putting an end to five months of rumors or actually getting more information about a cell phone that has sent people into hysterics (yes, I'm including Crave in that group).

Though the commercials didn't tell us much more than what we already know, they do let us get a look at the device in action. Here's what we saw.

Ringtone roundup: Top 5 are frozen in time

Each week, Crave tracks the most popular ringtones.

For all we know, the top five ringtones may be cemented in place for all of eternity. The same 10 ringtones make up the top 10 this week, except a few have switched places.

See the full Billboard ringtone chart right here.

Unk's "2 Step" holds on to the top spot and will presumably do so until everyone in America has downloaded it. Then, we'll all be confused whenever a phone rings, because everyone will have the same ringtone.

Elsewhere on the charts, Koji Kondo's "Super … Read more

Slide show roundup: Transformers, Eclipse AVN2210p, and Windows Home Server

We look at cool, modern Transformers toys; a GPS device that does so much, it required four CNET editors to test it; a preview build of Microsoft's Windows Home Server; and two slim phones comprise this photo roundup.

Photos: Transformers Transformers hits the big screen this July 4, and that means there's a whole lot of merchandising going on. Among the hordes of Transformers toys is Hasbro's Real Gear Transformers, a series of toy electronics that turn into robots. Remember Soundwave, the Transformer that became a tape deck? Well, this is the next generation of Transformers. And … Read more

Amp'd Mobile files for bankruptcy protection

You may have seen plenty of ads for Amp'd Mobile both in print and on the silver screen, but it looks like those ads simply weren't making them enough money. Amp'd Mobile, an MVNO targeting the young and urban, has filed for bankruptcy protection last Friday stating that their "back-end infrastructure was unable to keep up with customer demand." MocoNews.net reports that Amp'd Mobile apparently owes Verizon Wireless (the network they're piggybacking on) around $33 million, with several more million owed to other creditors. Ouch. Business is expected to continue as usual, … Read more

LG VX8550 may be available from Verizon

Engadget has recently received news that the LG VX8500 Chocolate slider may be replaced soon with the LG VX8550, which is apparently much easier to use than the Chocolate, with its notoriously hard-to-use navigation pad. As the product images show, the LG VX8550 is slated to be available from Verizon some time soon. We really don't have much to go on other than that, but head on over to their site to check out the pics. We'll keep our eyes peeled for further information.

Virgin Mobile flubs up ads in NYC

Advertisements are part of the landscape here in New York City (hello, Times Square) and us locals generally like to ignore them. Which is why plenty of companies are willing to bend over backwards to get New Yorkers to stop walking really fast while blasting music into their iPod headphones and, well, notice some advertisements. Virgin Mobile's one of the recent ones, having introduced a "You Rule" campaign that addresses specific groups of New Yorkers. It's been placing them in specific neighborhoods, too, in an attempt to gain buzz by delivering personalized shout-outs.

Photos: New Pantech for Disney Mobile

We haven't heard from Disney Mobile since the MVNO put out its first two cell phones a year ago with the Pantech DM-P100 and the LG DM-L200. So now at long last, we got our hands on a new handset, the Pantech DM-P205. Sporting a thin but relatively bland design, the DM-P205 offers a VGA camera, Bluetooth, a speakerphone, and voice dialing. See it from all angles in our slide show.

AT&T gives us two new Samsungs

AT&T/Cingular has been a bit quiet lately, but that all changed this week when the carrier announced three new cell phones. Tuesday it was the RIM BlackBerry Curve, and today it's the Samsung SGH-A717 and SGH-A727. Though the handsets aren't brand new (we saw the former at CTIA and the latter at CES), this is the first time they've landed at a U.S. carrier. And it's interesting to note that these are two of the first handsets to show the new AT&T branding. Both offer multimedia features, and this being … Read more

Verizon Wireless launches the rugged G'zOne Type-S

Verizon Wireless has just announced that it will be the exclusive provider of the Casio G'zOne Type-S rugged cell phone, starting tomorrow. A successor to the Type-V handset it debuted a year ago, the Type-S is much smaller and has a more streamlined designed, but it was still made with the same military-grade specifications. According to Verizon and Casio, it is able to withstand extreme humidity, three feet of water for up to 30 minutes, and drops from about five feet; it can also resist dust as fine as silica flour. It certainly looks rugged, too, with its sturdy … Read more
