Amazon Kindle customers could get more than double what was previously estimated from the recent Apple e-book lawsuit settlement, the company posted in its forum on Friday.
Pending court approval, some customers who previously purchased books from the publishers involved in the case are estimated to receive between $0.73 to $3.82 per Kindle book thanks to more publishing companies agreeing to the settlement, according to the Amazon. The US Attorneys General had previously said the refund would range from $0.30 to $1.32.
The refund is the result of a $165 million settlement from a lawsuit in which the US Department of Justice accused Apple and several of the nation's largest publishers … Read more
UPDATED at 1:03 p.m. PT: with judge's recommendations on the sanctions Tuesday.
Apple fired back -- again -- at the Department of Justice over the latest reforms it proposed to protect competition in the e-books market following the computer maker's conviction in July of a price-fixing conspiracy.
In a letter to the court filed Monday, Apple attorney Orin Snyder called the government's revised remedies a "broadside masquerading as a brief" that largely ignores the court's instructions to find a compromise with Apple and rein in a request for an external antitrust monitor. … Read more
The next update to OS X 10.8 (version 10.8.5) is expected to be released imminently, and among a number of included stability and performance fixes, Apple has addressed a throttled networking speed bug that affected systems with 802.11ac Wi-Fi cards.
Apple released new MacBook Air models at WWDC that, along with impressive battery performance, contain faster 802.11ac-capable Wi-Fi network adapters, offering real-world transfer speeds of around 50MB/s. However, in testing, some noticed that the speeds of these systems were truncated. While transfers were still fast, they topped out at around 21MB/s, under half … Read more
The HP SlateBook x2 is a "woulda, coulda, shoulda" Android tablet that doesn't quite justify its $480 price tag.
No, it's not a bad tablet. There are plenty of connectivity ports, the screen resolution is high -- if not impressively so -- and while in gaming performance it can't match the $300 Nvidia Shield, Hewlett-Packard's Tegra 4-fueled device still manages impressive frame rates on most benchmarks.
But the display and keyboard are problematic. The screen suffers from a garish yellow tint that looks...well, let's just say it puts me in mind of … Read more
The government, which in July won an antitrust suit against Apple, initially asked for an injunction of 10 years, but the DOJ on Friday said it's willing to cut that length to five years. It noted that it's trying to limit the possibility that changes in the industry will cause the decree to "outlive its usefulness and unnecessarily harm Apple." At the same time, … Read more
Editors' note: This article was originally published June 27, 2013, and was updated August 22, 2013, to reflect that many more systems are now available with Intel's latest processors, with still more to come later this year.
Before swiping your credit card on a new ultrabook, all-in-one, or convertible, you're going to want to dive a little deeper into the spec sheets. That's because the latest Intel CPU upgrade, introduced in June and code named Haswell (but officially known as "fourth-generation Core i series") offers significant battery life improvements in the laptops we've tested … Read more
Shoppers in the market for an e-book reader can now pick up the Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight for $99 after Barnes & Noble shaved another $20 off its price Sunday.
It's the device's second price cut since last September, when B&N reduced the price from $139 to $119. The latest drop prices the Nook Simple Touch below the Kindle Paperwhite, Amazon's rival e-ink e-reader that features an integrated light.
The reduction comes as demand for e-book readers appears to be waning. E Ink Holdings, which makes e-book reader screens for Amazon and B&… Read more
A federal judge has scheduled the trial to determine the damages Apple owes in its e-book price-fixing case for May 2014.
Judge Denise Cote of the U.S. District Court in the Southern District of New York scheduled the trial Tuesday, according to an order released to the public Wednesday. The new trial is the companion proceeding to last month's decision, in which Cote ruled that Apple played a central role in a conspiracy with publishers to eliminate price competition for e-books.
Apple said at the time that it would appeal Cote's decision. CNET has contacted Apple for … Read more
