Call a Sherpa: Sigma's 200-500mm lens

LAS VEGAS--When it comes to SLR cameras, there are big lenses with a long focal length, there are fast lenses with a wide aperture to gather lots of light, and flexible lenses with a wide zoom range.

Squeezing all three into the same lens is tough, but Tokyo-based lens maker Sigma has done just that with a model with a 200-500mm zoom range. It's got a wide aperture, F/2.8, for taking higher-speed shots.

But there's a catch: the lens weighs 40 kilograms, or about 88 pounds.

The company is showing off a prototype here at the … Read more

Panasonic, Leica tout monster SLR zoom

LAS VEGAS--Panasonic and its lens-making partner, Leica, announced a zoom lens with a whopping 14-150mm range Wednesday at the Photo Marketing Association's trade show here. The $1,000 lens is due to ship this month.

The lens, formally graced with the name of Leica D Vario-Elmar 14-150mm/F3.5-5.6 Asph. Mega O.I.S., is a member of the Four-Thirds system. That means it can attach to digital SLRs from Panasonic, Leica and Olympus. It also means its focal length equivalence is 28-300mm on a 35mm film SLR camera.

The lens offers some direct competition to Nikon's … Read more

Size Matters: 7x zoom in Samsung's tiny L77

Samsung has a new camera on the way, and it puts a big lens in a very small package. The Samsung L77 measures less than an inch thick, but it packs a 7x optical zoom lens into its slim metal body.

The 7-megapixel camera includes some useful features that work well with the powerful zoom. The L77 uses Samsung's Advanced Shake Reduction to help keep shots steady, and the sensor can reach up to ISO 1600 for dark and high-speed shots.

The L77 also features a 30fps VGA movie mode that can record MPEG-4 movie clips. This movie mode … Read more

7x zoom puts Webcam on steroids

If there's one technology that continues to remind us of the bad old days of dial-up modems, it's Webcams. The grainy transmissions often look only slightly better than night-vision camera images of a decade ago--especially if you try their useless digital zooms. But riding to the rescue is Hanwha's "Digital Cowboy" (with a name like this, it has to be Japanese). Its new offering, the DC-NCP130, is essentially a 1.3-megapixel telephoto Webcam with a removable 7x optical zoom that connects to your computer's USB port, according to CNET Asia. The camera is going … Read more

Olympus' spring camera offerings

Olympus has a handful of new digital cameras on the way, including two models with some interesting features we haven't seen before.

The 7-megapixel Olympus SP-550UZ replaces the SP-510UZ as the company's premier ultrazoom camera. While the SP-510UZ had a powerful 12x zoom lens, its replacement goes even further. The SP-550UZ uses the most powerful zoom lens we've seen in a midrange camera, a 28mm-to-504mm-equivalent telephoto lens that offers an 18x magnification factor. The zoom power is impressive enough, but the 28mm-equivalent wide-angle shot makes the camera seem even more appealing. The SP-550UZ features Olympus' dual image-stabilization … Read more

A field recorder for real life

As strange a concept as it may seem, some people actually want to record sounds in real-life conditions on occasion. An odd thing indeed in a world where practically everything is manufactured, tweaked and refined digitally (for better or worse).

But how do you keep your work from sounding like the cassette tape remixes we did in high school? The answer may be the "Zoom H4 Handy Recorder" from zZounds. Red Ferret says this "pretty cool piece of field recording gear" can record up to 380 minutes in CD quality and 34 hours in MP3 stereo … Read more
