Speaker dock would make Dumbo proud

The search for a universal portable speaker design has been like hunting for UFOs or the Loch Ness Monster: Tons of sightings, but the real thing remains as elusive as ever. If anything, we should expect to see increasingly unusual attempts until the electronics industry figures it out, whether they're made for media players, mobile phones, or any other form of portable audio.

The latest: elephant ears. That, at least, is what the "LiveSpeakR" stereo dock looks like to us. The system wraps around the iPhone or iPod Touch, connected by USB port and accommodating both vertical … Read more

Custom 'Pink iPhone' on the way?

Regardless of how one feels about pink, there has been a glaring omission from the mobile phones shaded in that most popular of pastels. This dire circumstance has apparently been remedied, however, with the unveiling of the "Pink iPhone."

It's a custom job, which is reflected in its $800 price, though Gizmodiva notes that it may just be hype for a marketing campaign that's supposedly giving one away for free. Still, given the popularity of pink handsets, it probably wouldn't have too much trouble selling if it's legit. Yet one can't help but … Read more

Seeking Alpha: Logicians need not apply.

Seeking Alpha's Todd Sullivan really doesn't like Apple's exclusive agreement with AT&T (tip o' the antlers to John Gruber). His dislike of it is so intense, as a matter of fact, that his "analysis" of the deal has burst free of the restraining coil of our so-called "Earth logic" and taken flight to a wondrous world of imagination. [Note for editor: is there a Doug Henning tag?]

The latest estimates have "unlocked" iPhones costing Apple over $1 billion in lost revenue the next 3 years.

Wow! $1 billion sounds … Read more

Can the rumored gPhone beat the iPhone?

Even though Google told the world last year that it had no plans of releasing its own hardware and would instead focus on the software side of cell phones, very few people actually believed the assertion.

After all, with the iPhone performing well all over the world and a whole new era of cell phones having been ushered in, why wouldn't Google try to get in on the ground floor and try to build a brand?

But for months, the company has been tight-lipped about any hardware and has told anyone who will listen that Android will revolutionize the cell phone business. But according to a recent rumor from Robert X. Cringley over at PBS, Google is poised to release one of these devices by the end of this year, or early 2009.… Read more

China Mobile running 400,000 unlocked iPhones

As many as 400,000 unlocked iPhones were running on China Mobile's cellular network at the end of last year, according to market research firm In-Stat.

Apple sold 3.7 million iPhones in 2007, and more than 10 percent of them are in China, In-Stat said, attributing that information to China Mobile. That helps explain part of the "iPhone gap" created by the difference between Apple's shipping totals for 2007 and the activations reported by its carrier partners in the U.S. and Europe.

Despite Apple's attempts to keep iPhone unlocking under wraps with new … Read more

Microsoft + Danger = iPhone competitor

How long have we been reading these Zune Phone rumors? Microsoft still hasn't officially announced any plans to build an iPhone, but yesterday's corporate reorganization clearly points that way.

Microsoft has reason to be worried. After about five years of plugging away with Windows Mobile, Microsoft's managed to create a reasonable competitor to Research in Motion for e-mail-enabled phones. But that's about it. In contrast, Apple launched the iPhone in June 2007 in the U.S. and by Q4, it was already the number-two provider of smart phone (or "converged device") OSs in the … Read more

First Look: Videora iPod Converter

The very popular Videora iPod Converter is one case in which an app shouldn't be too hastily judged by its name. This video-converting freebie transforms files for the range of Apple's ilk--three types of iPods and the iPhone to boot. Videora iPod Converter can grab and convert YouTube videos through an in-app browser (this is good for owners of the classic iPods), and will also work over files stored on your desktop (this is good for everyone).

However, Videora iPod Converter isn't the only free converter in town, and it has some notable drawbacks. Decide if it'… Read more

Don't hold your breath waiting for a 3G iPhone

Among the many complaints I have about the iPhone, 3G certainly sits atop the list. Instead of allowing me to surf around the Web at blazing speeds, Apple must have thought that a 3G device just wasn't good enough for me at this point and I would need to break into the iPhone world with a dog slow cell phone.

Thanks for looking out for me, Apple!

But as sales of the iPhone start to slow and the chances of Steve Jobs hitting the 10 million units sold mark dwindle, Apple is looking for ways to turn things around. And according to one report from Citibank, a 3G iPhone could be all the company needs to do just that.

Of course, it's looking more and more like the US won't be invited to that party.… Read more

T-Mobile promises 3G by summer; Android phone, Austrian iPhone by end of year

Almost every U.S. T-Mobile customer wants to know when the carrier will be activating its 3G network. After all, it is the only major carrier in the United States not to offer 3G. Though it has slowly begun introducing 3G-capable handsets, the carrier has remained maddeningly vague on when the service will activate.

But a news conference at the GSMA World Congress, T-Mobile CEO Hamid Akhavan dropped a few hints. When I asked him when the magic day will come, he didn't give an exact date but he did promise it would happen by this summer. Akhavan said … Read more
