iPhone

ELGAAAAAAAAAN!!!

Mike Elgan's at it again.

Apple Arrogance Unleashed! (Tip o' the antlers to Eloy Duran.)

Sigh.

But what other company in the industry would so blatantly embarrass one of its major partners like that?

Any guesses who Mike's talking about here? AT&T? Google? Yahoo?

No.

Microsoft.

Over a blue screen of death joke in the beta of Leopard.

Golly, the thought of Steve Ballmer throwing himself down on his bed and penning a crushed entry into his journal while sobbing to himself is...

Well, it's laughable, is what it is. Congratulations, Mike. You're four … Read more

ARM's new Cortex core ready for low-power multicore chips

Two weeks after Intel signaled its future low-power intentions, ARM has unveiled its latest mobile chip design for smart phones and consumer devices that will arrive around 2010.

The Cortex A9 is an extension of the Cortex family of applications processor cores that ARM unveiled two years ago with the Cortex A8. It combines the multiprocessor support of older ARM cores with the Cortex design, ARM's highest-performance implementation to date. Several ARM partners, such as Texas Instruments, Samsung, STMicroelectronics, Nvidia and NEC Electronics also announced plans to use the Cortex A9 in future chips for smart phones and consumer … Read more

iPhone bricking: I blame AT&T

After a while with my newly dehacked iPhone, I'm left with Tap Tap Revolution withdrawal, many fewer icons and a loss of some of the features I had come to appreciate from my iPhone.

Could you say I'm bitter? Perhaps. But what may surprise you is that I've had a bit of a change of heart. (In my pre-update post), I told you that if Apple decided to brick iPhones and disrupt hacks, it will have single-handedly destroyed its ability to maintain its post as the world's most influential tech company.

But after analyzing the update that actually came out, I don't blame Apple anymore. Instead, I blame AT&T for forcing Apple to do something that it has never done before and effectively become the bad guy while AT&T laughs its way to the bank.

Shame on you, AT&T.… Read more

Verizon, where's your iPhone killer?

Verizon Wireless unveiled four new handsets it plans to have on the market for the Holiday 2007 season, but unless I missed something, there wasn't an iPhone killer among them.

On Tuesday, Verizon Wireless invited various reporters, such as myself, to a hotel in New York City to take a look at new handsets expected to launch before Thanksgiving just in time for the holiday season. Company representative said that these phones were just a sampling of what's to come, with more handsets expected to hit store shelves in the next couple of months. Maybe I am being … Read more

V-Moda earphones meld phone, music

V-Moda has always been able to combine quality with high fashion, not an easy feat considering the limited canvas afforded by something as small as an earbud. And now it's managed to cram a key new function into its headsets as well.

The latest version of its "Vibe Duo" model is designed for the iPhone with a built-in set of controls that include functions for calls as well as music--yet another reflection of the ever-converging worlds of mobile handsets and media players. Apple includes its own headphones with the iPhone but worked with V-Moda to develop its … Read more

Sharp looks for an edge in iPhone stakes

CHIBA, Japan--The iPhone won't be the only finger-flicking phone on the market for long.

Sharp Electronics is showing off a touch screen at Ceatec, Japan's big tech trade show taking place here this week just outside of Tokyo, that lets you control the interface with finger swipes. Just as with Apple's iPhone, you can flick to shrink the size of images, blow them up, and scroll left to right or up and down. The device is called the "system LCD with embedded optical sensors"--not quite as catchy a name as iPhone.

But it's … Read more

When forum posts ruled the world

Information Week's Alexander Wolfe may be having some trouble with the plural.

His piece on how iPhone users are talking "lawsuit" is entirely based on...

Well, wait. Before we proceed, the Macalope should state that due to disturbingly high inanity content, the following should not be viewed by small children or pregnant women.

OK. Just a little warning the FCC has asked the Macalope to start using. Apparently there were some problems. Nothing serious, just some "nosers" at some of the Enderle material. But, better safe than sorry.

Anyway, Wolfe's piece is based entirely … Read more

Welcome to Geek Culture

When I was in high school, all those years ago, being a nerd, or a geek, was a painful thing. We were the outcasts, the forgotten ones who couldn't get a date to save our lives, and for whom the future seemed certain to be a blur of solitary days and nights spent coding.

Over the years, as my lot in life improved, it occurred to me from time to time that I should go back to that school, take a few of these unfortunate souls aside, and give them the good news: Sure, today you're alone and … Read more

Trouble in iPhone paradise

I think it's officially safe to say that the honeymoon is over for the iPhone.

Just like the day you discover that your gorgeous new wife leaves used tea bags in the sink and that she never really liked baseball in the first place, iPhone owners are waking up to reality. Sometimes, there's a price to be paid for jumping into a love affair without taking a minute to think about it.

September was the tipping point for many. It's been just over three months since Apple started selling iPhones, and although the company has sold over a millionRead more

New York resident files quixotic suit over iPhone price cut

The erratic play of the New York Mets appears to have spurred at least one city resident and iPhone owner on a perplexing quest for justice.

Dongmei Li, a resident of the borough of Queens, sued Apple earlier this week for "price discrimination" brought on by the $200 drop in the price of the iPhone announced earlier this month by Apple CEO Steve Jobs. Li names Apple, Jobs and AT&T as defendants in her suit, filed on Monday and spotted by AppleInsider.

The claims in the case make about as much sense to me, a long-suffering … Read more
