HTC One reboots Sense and hopes for a comeback

Nothing sums up the HTC One's new look better than its revamped clock-and-weather widget.

Gone is the trademark retro flip clock, which has been a fixture on marquee HTC Android phones since the Hero debuted more than three years ago, and in its place is a simpler, more digital-looking virtual time display. Next to it is a modern icon to represent the weather, a far cry from the colorful graphics found in previous phones.

As the clock is so intimately tied to HTC's identity, it was not an easy decision, nor one that was universally supported. HTC's … Read more

HTC explains why 4 megapixels are better than 8

With its new flagship phone, the 4.7-inch HTC One, HTC has made the seemingly baffling choice of opting for a 4-megapixel camera, instead of an 8- or 13-megapixel unit of the kind seen on the high-end smartphones of its rivals. That doesn't seem to bother the Taiwanese firm, however, which insists that dropping the megapixel count on its "Ultrapixel" camera is "doing the right thing for image quality."

The Ultrapixel 4-megapixel sensor measures one-third of an inch, which is the same size as the sensors found in phones such as the 8-megapixel iPhone 5Read more

HTC devices held up at German airport over patent spat

HTC's big event today isn't enough to overshadow an issue the company is having with Germany's customs officers.

According to the company, customs officers at the Frankfurt-Hahn airport held up HTC device shipments between February 4 and February 10. The seizure resulted from an ongoing patent war HTC is waging against patent-licensing company IPCom.

Foss Patents was first to report on the seizures.

HTC has been battling IPcom over alleged patent infringement for years. In 2011, IPCom slapped HTC with a cease-and-desist order. Last year, however, HTC won a key ruling against IPCom after a court said … Read more

Verizon will issue an update for the HTC Droid DNA in the near term that tackles some of the more frustrating user problems encountered by customers so far.

In a blog post, Big Red promises to update the HTC Droid DNA. Sorry, but this isn't the Android 4.2.2 update currently rolling out to the Nexus line; this is far less ambitious.

Once installed, the handset will benefit from better connectivity and added functionality. There is very little new in the software, but most of the features outlined are listed with "improvements."
