First look at Apple's Final Cut Pro X

After two months of waiting, Apple's Final Cut Pro X has arrived. The software went live in Apple's Mac App Store yesterday and has officially replaced previous versions of Final Cut Pro: both the Studio suite and Apple's pro-sumer Express product.

I've spent the day with the software putting it through the paces. As you'll read, it worked out well for me, but my needs are not necessarily that of this application's target audience.

As background, let me get it out right from the top that I'm not a professional film editor. My … Read more

Final Cut Pro X is a follow-up to Final Cut Pro 7, software Apple released in 2009 as part of Final Cut Studio. The new $299.99 version is a complete 64-bit rewrite of Final Cut, absorbing abilities from several of the software programs that are included in the Studio suite.

Report: Final Cut Pro X arriving next week

With June nearly halfway over, the clock is ticking for Apple to make good on releasing the next major version of its Final Cut Pro X video editing software this month. A new report from Japanese Mac blog Macotakara claims that release is going down next week, and will coincide with announcements of several new third-party ThunderBolt-enabled peripherals.

Apple first debuted the updated video editing software at the Supermeet event, which took place during the National Association of Broadcasters event in Las Vegas in April. There, the company provided a demo of the new features and announced the $299 price … Read more

HBO Go, why do you spurn me so?

Dear HBO,

Hey. It's me, Scott. Remember me? I used to be an HBO subscriber, back when I had cable. That was about a year and a half ago. It's been a while. I miss you a little. Hope you're doing OK.

I mean, I hear you are. Everyone's talking about your latest shows. "Game of Thrones" sounds great. I used to follow some of the others. Now, I've sort of lost track. I've been doing great, by the way. I'm watching TV on Hulu Plus and Netflix, and getting by. … Read more

Cutting your cable can work, if you're a TV snob

Cable cutting has garnered a lot of hype lately, but it can become a lot less appealing once you dive into the details. CNET Senior Editor David Katzmaier didn't even last a full month during his cord-cutting experiment last November, and CNET contributor Geoff Morrison was similarly unenthusiastic when he broke down the details of what it would take for him to be cable-free.

Those cautionary tales are excellent resources for anyone thinking about taking the leap, but not every cable-cutting story ends in failure. I canceled my cable more than four and half years ago and haven't … Read more

"It" being "nothing." Also, T-Mobile tries to win new customers with new unlimited plans, Apple may get into the Netflix-killing game, and whether we should ban the "Twilight" books just to save ourselves from Facebook scams. --Molly
