Case-Mate I.D. adds extra pouch to iPhone

I'm not a fan of protective case for gadgets (which, as long as they function, are fine the way they are, even with a few scratches). For this reason, the only things I've put on my iPhone 3GS so far, and only when I travel, are the Mophie Juice packs, which add more battery life to the phone.

I just, however, found a new protective case that I actually am going to use more regularly, for the sake of convenience. It's the Case-Mate I.D. case.

Unlike other protective cases that try to be as slim as … Read more

Sound ID announces Bluetooth headset, CompanionLink remote microphone

We've been fans of Sound ID headsets in the past, and so have many of you, so we're pleased to see the company come out with its latest and greatest headset, the Sound ID 400.

Taking the form factor of the Sound ID 300 but combining it with the high-end technology of the Sound ID SM100, the Sound ID 400 is quite possibly the company's best headset yet. It has a rather slim and nondescript appearance, but underneath that are quite a few features. They include up to three "Personal Sound" listening modes that promise … Read more

Versatile label creator

Label Flow helps create labels with its instinctive program. By providing a well-planned layout and a seemingly endless supply of labels, this program will meet shipping needs.

We jumped immediately into the program thanks to its intuitive wizard, which makes the interface a breeze to deal with. The strongest aspect of the wizard was its selection of labels. We were impressed that every brand from Avery to Wal-Mart was represented and couldn't imagine a brand name or label type not included. We eased through the entry fields for standard label additions like addresses and names, but were pleasantly surprised … Read more

Powerful password and security manager

ID Vault is an incredibly useful program that helps users keep their personal information secure while managing their usernames and passwords. While we'd like to see the program deal with browsers a little more smoothly, overall we were quite impressed with it.

The program's interface is sleek and intuitive. The program includes its own browser, and to start, users simply navigate to a Web site that they would typically sign in to, such as their bank, and enter their username and password. ID Vault will then show a prompt asking if the user successfully logged in; if so, … Read more

Accused mastermind of TJX hack to plead guilty

Albert Gonzalez, the alleged ringleader of one of the largest known identity theft cases in U.S. history, has agreed to plead guilty to all 19 counts of related charges against him, according to court documents filed Friday.

Gonzalez, 28, of Miami, was accused in August 2008 of helping steal millions of credit card and debit card numbers from major U.S. retail chains. Among the retailers hacked were TJX Companies (owner of T.J.Maxx), BJ's Wholesale Club, OfficeMax, Boston Market, Barnes & Noble, Sports Authority, Forever21, and DSW.

Under the plea agreement filed with the U.S. … Read more

ScreenTunes IDs songs from movies, TV shows

ScreenTunes is a free search tool that helps users find where a song has been played in any piece of professionally-produced video content. You just type in the name of the song and it tells you all the films and TV shows in which it's appeared. You can then listen to the track right from the results (using Grooveshark), or purchase the track on iTunes or Amazon's online stores.

Along with acting as a search tool for individual songs, ScreenTunes can be used to look up a track by its lyrics. This also works on entire movie titles, … Read more

RSA releases SecurID Software Token for iPhone and iPod Touch

RSA, the security division of EMC, has released RSA SecurID Software Token for iPhone (iTunes Link), a free app that lets you supplement typical user log-ins with an extra, cryptographically strong ID confirmation. The app turns your iPhone or iPod Touch into a SecurID authenticator.

The app works with a SecurID token seed and RSA's Authentication Manager; together they can provide a one-time password that changes every minute. This password is used to securely access a VPN, WLAN, or Web application. Although the SecurID Software app is available at no cost from the iTunes App Store, you must purchase … Read more

Fallout publisher scoops up classic Doom/Quake developer

A bit of consolidation going on in the video game biz today, as ZeniMax Media, parent company of Bethesda Softworks (Elder Scrolls, Fallout 3), is acquiring id Software, developer of the classic Doom, Quake, and Wolfenstein franchises.

While responsible for some of the most important PC games of all time (and essentially creating the first-person shooter with 1992's Wolfenstein 3D), iD has struggled in recent years to find the same relevance among console gamers and develop new properties. The company has also needed to form a more mutually beneficial relationship with a publisher (which is why there are very … Read more

What's your identity fraud risk level?

Like many people, I'm worried about identity fraud. Not paranoid, just generally curious what the chances are that I could be victimized by things like mail theft. Sure, I could sign up for one of the fee-based identity fraud monitoring services like LifeLock or Debix, or I can get a credit report that might give me some clue that a credit card has been taken out by someone else in my name.

Now there is a Web site that offers an assessment of a person's identity fraud risk for free.

The My ID Score site was recently launched … Read more

Webware 100 winner: OpenID

Site: OpenID.net Category: Infrastructure & Storage

OpenID is a solution for the log-in problem of having multiple identities online. With OpenID, you create one master identity online at a site you use a lot and tend to remain logged into--for instance, a social network or your personal blog. When you need to identify yourself to another new site, you point that site toward your main identity-providing site where you're already logged in. Your main site sends the new site your log-in credentials, so the new site now knows who you are.

In theory, if OpenID was adopted on … Read more
