Sprint: Ice Cream Sandwich updates are coming

The Samsung Nexus S 4G isn't the only Sprint phone to tuck into an Ice Cream Sandwich update.

Today, Sprint announced on its Web site that it's readying over-the-air ICS updates for Android smartphones that include the Samsung Epic 4G Touch, among others.

Sprint has promised to "begin to roll out Google's latest version of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich, to our customers in 2012," but isn't sharing its timetable or the complete list of handsets it'll support. With more than half a year to go before 2012's close, Sprint's guidance remains … Read more

Did the Asus Transformer Pad just pop up early on Amazon?

Last week the Asus Transformer Pad 300 -- the follow-up to the acclaimed Transformer Prime tablet that drops the "Eee" branding, as well as about $100 from the price -- started popping up on some retailers' sites for preorder, with an anticipated available date of April 22.

Now, as of this morning, the Transformer TF300 is listed as "In Stock" on Amazon, with three different merchants -- including Amazon itself -- saying they'd be happy to sell you one.

Of course, if you're thinking you can order one with your Amazon Prime account and … Read more

Making a great cheap Android tablet

Ematic entered the Android tablet fray yesterday when it announced the inexpensive eGlide Prism.

Priced as low as $157, the device runs Android 4.0 and features a 7-inch 800x480-pixel resolution display. Powered by a 1GHz processor, it also brings 8GB flash memory, 512MB RAM, and a front-facing Webcam. While it's certainly not the type of hardware to contend with a Galaxy Tab 2, it's in that interesting space between a Kindle Fire and a "real" tablet.

I typically cringe when I hear the word "value" associated with mobile tech -- Ematic proudly call themselves a "leader in value tablets" -- since the word conjures images of creaky plastic and poorly lit, low-resolution displays. That's why I'll pass on this model and recommend that others save a few bucks on something else. … Read more

Nvidia Tegra 4 chip leak whets appetite for non-iOS tablets

A roadmap of Nvidia's next chip, the Tegra 4, could also be a blueprint for the internals of future Android and Windows tablets.

If VR-ZONE's (in this case, VR-ZONE's Chinese-language site) sources speak the truth, then we've got plenty of tablets packing quad-core A15 chips to look forward to.

What's an A15 you ask? That's the next chip design -- officially the Cortex A15 -- from tablet and smartphone chip design powerhouse ARM.

Think of it this way: Four A15s are faster than the four Nvidia Tegra 3 Cortex-A9s now found in the Asus … Read more

Samsung Nexus S 4G tucks into Ice Cream Sandwich

Restless for a taste of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich? If you're a Samsung Nexus S 4G owner, don't be.

Sprint began rolling out the over-the-air ICS update today. The carrier predicts that by the end of the month, all users will have had a chance to install Google's most recent OS (so a little patience might be necessary.)

Of course, Nexus S 4G users are used to patience at this point, while waiting months for their turn to get an update that many assumed would come to their "pure" Android devices first.

Transformer Prime firmware update protects gamers from themselves

I had the chance to briefly play around with the latest Transformer Prime update. My impressions are thus:

System bar lock By enabling the system bar lock, the system bar (which lies across the bottom of the screen) will be unavailable until unlocked by the user.

This could prove especially useful if playing a game like Riptide GP where your fingers are usually locked into position at the bottom corners of the screen. With the lock on you'll no longer waste precious nanoseconds instantly popping back into the game after you accidentally tap the Settings icon. Say "thank you" gamers.

Not to say it works perfectly, though. Periodically, after locking the screen, it would revert back to an unlocked state after a couple seconds. … Read more

Android 4.0 for the Galaxy Note leaked

Samsung has been a bit of a tease when it comes to exactly when we might see Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich for the Galaxy Note -- and nobody likes a tease, especially in the rooting and modding community.

At first, Samsung told us to expect the upgrade sometime in the first quarter of 2012, and then as March was winding down, the update was pushed back. Now, a leaked version of Ice Cream Sandwich for the Galaxy Note has been posted at RootzWiki and the reaction in the community so far seems to be quite positive. … Read more
