Power Downloader customizes his desktop

While Power Downloader was sifting through criminal case files recently, he received an e-mail from Kitty Kilobyte who had gone back to school. After telling him of her latest "impossible" assignments and new "amazing" friends she had made, Kitty had an interesting software request. Kitty wanted some way to make her computer stand out from the rest of her classmates. She figured, if she's the niece of a famous software superhero, it should show--perhaps even if it's just in her computer's interface.… Read more

Game in style with...vinyl?

Gelaskins may offer vinyl to dress up your iPods, but what about your gaming devices?

It seems like Colorforms, while in a different form, are back for our generation. Only this time, instead of applying them to a stick-it board or fridge, you use them to adorn your high-tech toys.

iStyles offers art and patterned vinyl skins for stylizing your Wii, Apple TV, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, iPod and portable gaming devices.

Prices range from $5 for a Wii nunchuk/remote skin set to $6 for an iPod nano skin to $25 to cover your entire Xbox.

'iLift' takes aim at cellulite

Call us cynical, but we put this item in the same category as the "HairMax LaserComb" and the "Zeno" zit zapper. The latest gadget that claims to improve personal appearance is the "iLift," an electronic device that promises to combat the ravages of time where it counts--on the face and cellulite, to name just two perennial problem spots.

The secret formula involves some combination of ions and infrared rays that can be adjusted with four programs, according to the product literature, attacking bacteria while improving circulation and speeding up skin metabolism. All for less … Read more

Your iPhone is disgusting

iSkin's latest antibacterial case made for Apple's iPhone reminds us that a product's coolness is no defense against deadly bacteria. In fact, studies have shown that cell phones happen to be one of the filthiest objects imaginable--dirtier than a toilet seat, computer keyboard, or the bottom of a shoe. There's just something magical about the combination of spittle and your text-crazy hands that make mobile phones a germ's best friend. The antibacterial iSkin Revo case for the iPhone is due out this month with a price of $39. Until then, think twice before passing your iPhone aroundRead more

Decorate your laptop with GelaSkins

GelaSkins aren't new. In fact, I wrote about the ones made for the iPod a while back, and I had no trouble recommending them. And for the record, the Toxicity skin is still stuck on the house iPod to this date, over nine months later. Whether that's meant to be a testament to its stickiness quotient or my tolerance of the design, I'm not sure.

Anyway, GelaSkins recently released an array of stickers for Apple laptops, and although that's not exactly my department, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to dress up my iBook when … Read more

Virtual drum solos on the go

If there's any musical instrument that might challenge the unhealthy affection for guitars among Cravers, it would be virtual drums. Whether they be of the roll-up or the fingertip variety, percussion seems to be a favorite instrumental variety. So what could be better than a set that plays with an iPod?

The "Mini miJam Drums" don't come with a traditional set of heads but are nevertheless "equipped with a selection of sound effects and background rhythms, including bass, snare, cymbals and the hi-hat" that can be played along with an MP3 player or computer. … Read more

The iPhone: Fake it till they make it

By the time the iPhone launches in June, its user interface may be old news.

The iPhony skin for Palm OS mimicked iPhone's interface, but it was mostly a skin-deep imitation. More iPhone skins were developed for other phones. One also was created for Windows Mobile, but it was yanked for legal reasons.

The latest skin we've seen is the most full-featured of the rip-offs.

YouTube user tzywen has created an impressive iPhone interface for Windows Mobile, complete with a sliding unlock button and one-touch launch buttons for several apps. Of course, it also mimics the iPhone's … Read more

A keyboard skin for Photoshoppers

There's this guy in the office, Vincent, who has a really fancy, colorful keyboard. It's because he does video editing and stuff. The keyboard has all the Final Cut Pro shortcuts labeled on it and a fancy jog wheel and knobs and buttons and more knobs and I think it also purifies water.

Vincent just sits there smirking at his desk, basking in the glow of his majestic keyboard. I call him Johnny Fancykeys, but that's just to cover up my intense jealousy.

I don't use Photoshop much, and I don't own an MacBook or … Read more

First look at iSkin's Cerulean iPod adapter

Controlling your tunes from across the room can be difficult. Now, iSkin's new Cerulean RX+TX Bluetooth solution forgoes the need for a separate remote by using your very own iPod to control your music on an iPod dock connector-enabled device. I got a chance to play around with this tonight, and the big deal here is the range, which is around 100 meters. What's nice is that when you get out of range, the music cuts out completely; there's no distortion or signal loss like you get with some FM transmitters.

The kit uses two pieces, … Read more
