MP3 player bulks up, dives in rough waters

Sometimes it seems that there's some kind of competition to see which gadget can be subjected to more abuse, especially of the water-torture variety: the MP3 player or the USB drive.

Although the latter gladiator seems to be well ahead in the games, a tough new media player has entered the contest--a 1GB version of the "Freestyle Audio Digital Music Player." (A 512MB model had been promised to come out this year as well, affixed to a helmet.)

Chip Chick says the 1.3-ounce player can be submerged up to 10 feet in water and last for … Read more

SeaLife. SeaLife run.

Waterlogged photos have cause to rejoice, as SeaLife has announced two new cameras. Like all SeaLife cameras, the Reefmaster Mini and the Ecoshot feature waterproof, beefed-up casings for rough shooting. The Reefmaster Mini can handle depths as much as 75 feet, the Ecoshot can sink as far as 130 feet underwater, and both cameras can handle drops of as far as six feet.

Other than their extreme ruggedness, the 6-megapixel Reefmaster Mini and Ecoshot are rather lackluster cameras. With a 42mm-equivalent, fixed-length lenses, they're not going to win any prizes for best feature sets. They have a unique Spy … Read more

Two Pentax premieres

Less than a month after their last announcement, Pentax has unveiled two new cameras. The Pentax Optio A30 and the W30 are two compact cameras that respectively offer high-resolution and waterproof shooting.

The Optio A30 is an ultracompact camera that packs a 10-megapixel sensor into a metal body that's just 0.9 inch thick. It uses a fairly standard 3x, 38-to-114mm-equivalent lens with Pentax's Enhanced Shake Reduction digital image stabilization. The camera includes a wide variety of features and modes, including a face-recognizing autofocus and autoexposure mode, a manual exposure mode for more advanced users, and a 30fps … Read more

Olympus' spring camera offerings

Olympus has a handful of new digital cameras on the way, including two models with some interesting features we haven't seen before.

The 7-megapixel Olympus SP-550UZ replaces the SP-510UZ as the company's premier ultrazoom camera. While the SP-510UZ had a powerful 12x zoom lens, its replacement goes even further. The SP-550UZ uses the most powerful zoom lens we've seen in a midrange camera, a 28mm-to-504mm-equivalent telephoto lens that offers an 18x magnification factor. The zoom power is impressive enough, but the 28mm-equivalent wide-angle shot makes the camera seem even more appealing. The SP-550UZ features Olympus' dual image-stabilization … Read more

iPod speaker goes swimming

Can't live without your iPod, even when you're taking a dip in the pool or grabbing a quick shower? The EGO Waterproof Sound Case is a waterproof iPod speaker system that's made of the same shatterproof polycarbonate that goes into bulletproof glass. It protects your iPod from water, and it even passes the "will it float?" test. Specs include a pair of neodymium speakers, a waterproof membrane for the iPod Click Wheel, and 30-hour battery life (with four AA alkaline batteries). Throw in wrist and shoulder straps and an adjustable stand, and you've got … Read more

Heroic camera lets your wrist do the shooting

I love gadgets, especially if they can fit on my wrist. Televisions are cool, but TV watches are cooler. Lasers are awesome, but watches with lasers built into them? Even more awesome. And now there's a camera you can fit onto your wrist.

The Digital Hero 3 is a 3-megapixel, wrist-mounted, waterproof sports camera. It's tiny and hardly the most impressive shooter at CES, but it can take 3-megapixel still images and 30fps VGA videos with sound. It fits inside a waterproof case that straps to your wrist, so you can easily shoot snowboarding, surfing, or any other … Read more

The anti-electrocution MP3 player

Our overprotective parental genes have led us to express concerns about underwater electronics on more than a few occasions. It's that old radio-bathtub-electrocution warning from our childhood, not unlike the standard you'll-put-your-eye-out routine.

So even though it may not be scientifically necessary, we approve of the sealed-case design of this waterproof MP3 player from Japan's Sunconnection. The airtight casing has even skipped the usual display (gasp), though it seems to have most of the standard specs, Fareastgizmos says. And even if it does end up failing, you'll only be out $25--just hope that it doesn't … Read more

A camcorder for the Atlantis market

With so many products going under water these days, the only thing we can surmise is that people are really taking this whole global warming thing seriously. That would be at least one explanation for the proliferation of gadgets like this waterproof digital movie camera.

Gizmag says the Sanyo VPC-CA6 has a resolution of 6 megapixels and a 5x optical zoom, retailing for around $250. It does take stills as well, but if you're not satisfied with the quality you can try any number of waterproof point-and-shoot cameras. Either way, you can transfer your shots with your waterproof USB deviceRead more

Air-drying your wetsuit is so '90s

Now this item should prove Crave's dedication, given that it's so foreign to us on so many fronts. Among them: surfing (no), frigid water (sorry) and physical exertion in general (sounds vaguely familiar).

But if you're into that sort of thing, you might well be interested in the "Hangair Wetsuit Drying System" (and probably from California--just a wild guess). Popgadget says this state-of-the-art technology employs "a two-speed, high-powered waterproof fan to ensure ventilation for your wetsuit or other sports apparel and is constructed out of Nylon 66 for durability." As for us, we'… Read more

For USB abusers only

What is it about USB devices that makes people want to abuse them so? This HDMC USB key can be dunked 1 meter under water and withstand shocks from drops of up to 4 feet, according to Akihabara News. Other than its rather odd almost-square shape (about 2 by 2.4 inches), the key is most notable for an extra-wide cord that doubles as a protective bumper around the device.

If you're really sadistic, however, you probably also want to consider the Kingston key that can be submerged even deeper (4 feet) and withstand temperatures minus-4 and 185 degrees … Read more
