Parents appalled that school principal is sexy YouTube rapper

We all have an alter ego.

For some of us, it comes out when the drinks are flowing and the inhibitions have taken a vacation.

For Emmaneul Polanco, principal of Junior High School 80 in the Bronx, it comes out when he makes rap videos and posts them online, hangs out with comely ladies, and parties as a good rapper should -- at least if a report in the New York Daily News is to be believed.

According to the report, Polanco uses the name El Siki, and in music videos, he raps in Spanish about the things rappers like … Read more

Poll: Do you listen to movies or TV over headphones?

I suppose it's still a fair assumption that more people listen to music than movies with headphones, but there has to be a growing audience listening to movies, TV shows, and YouTube videos via their headphones. Thanks to the booming popularity of tablets, might the ratio of movies-to-music listening time be moving away from music? Or not?

I watch a lot of movies at home with headphones on. They present a level of detail that you can get from speakers only when you play them really loud. With headphones, I don't have to crank the volume. They're … Read more

YouTube mulling $50 million investment in Vevo -- report

YouTube might soon invest some cash in Vevo, according to a new report.

Google's video site may be investing $50 million in Vevo, a joint-venture music-video site established by Universal Music and Sony Music Entertainment for music videos, according to a Bloomberg report today, citing people who claim to have knowledge of the negotiations. In return for the $50 million, YouTube would acquire less than 10 percent of the company, indicating Vevo might be valued at over $500 million.

Perhaps more importantly for Google, the deal would also ensure that Vevo's music videos stay on YouTube, according to … Read more

Twitter tops in Super Bowl commercial mentions

Twitter is tops when it comes to social network mentions in Super Bowl commercials.

The social network was mentioned in 26 of 52 national television commercials at the Super Bowl last night, according to a tally from Marketing Land's Matt McGee. Facebook mustered four mentions in the commercials, followed by one each for Instagram and YouTube. Google+ got no mentions.

In order to arrive at his tally, McGee started counting only after the opening kickoff. He stopped counting when the clock reached 0:00. Only national commercials were included, and anything from the NFL or CBS promoting their own … Read more

Video: Viral videos -- time to make money

I love a good viral video. Who doesn't? In preparing to work on this video and blog post, I decided to rewatch some oldies but goodies. JK Wedding Entrance Dance, anyone? I also made my way through a list of top click-earners on YouTube to find some I might have missed from a few years ago. Six minutes of Judson Laipply showing us the Evolution of Dance was supremely entertaining and I could easily see why it has earned all 209,558,808 views. And then there's the wondrous 17 seconds of a tiny baby panda's gigantic sneezeRead more

Rumor Has It: Will Apple go plastic for a low-cost iPhone?

The iPhone is a pricey device, a luxury item, a status symbol, and that's exactly how Apple wants it. But as long as the iPhone has existed, we the people have called upon Apple to make a less-expensive version. Rumors are in overdrive at the moment that Apple may be finally planning such a dramatic move. How will it cut costs, though?

We discuss on this week's show. We also check out an image of what may be -- but probably isn't -- the back piece for the fifth-generation iPad, and YouTube may be asking for your credit card number this year.

At the end of the show we make a sad announcement about a change that's coming. We won't give it away here, but let us just say: it's not the end of the world. Modern technology will bridge even the vastest distances! (Hint: Emily will finally find a reason to use Google+ Hangouts.)

Watch to the end, and then send us your comments.

'Downton Abbey' as SNES video game: Fluff those pillows!

It's fun to sit around and play "What if?" What if Google acquired Microsoft? What if Superman and Spider-Man made a movie together? What if "Downton Abbey" were a Super Nintendo game? We have a pretty good answer to that last question.

YouTube user Bill Kiley posted a video showing what the imported PBS megahit would look like as an SNES game. It comes complete with an insanely catchy digital ditty that's perfect for the SNES period. As a new footman at Downton, you're faced with a myriad of tasks that come fast and furious.… Read more

YouTube to try out paid channel subscriptions, says AdAge

Dancing baby vs. YouTube-Prince case set to go to trial

The woman who posted a video of her children dancing to the Prince tune "Let's Go Crazy" and has since waged nearly a six-year legal fight with Universal Music Group over the clip, may see her day in court.

US District Judge Jeremy Fogel ruled today that a summary judgment will not decide this case, which means that if the two parties don't settle, this lawsuit will proceed to a jury trial.

The whole suit got started in 2007 when Prince asked YouTube to remove the clip of the dancing boys. When the clip got scrubbed, … Read more
