Of the several news readers offered in Apple's iTunes App Store to date, NetNewsWire stands out as the most appealing. Unlike Mobile News from the Associated Press, NetNewsWire pulls in stories from multiple sources, and unlike Google Reader, it does so nearly instantly in a true native application (Google Readers whisks you to an iPhone-optimized Web application after you select it from a list of more options on Google Mobile.)
Like many other applications, NetNewsWire is the iPhone version of an already-brawny Web service operated by NewsGator, and one whose desktop versions CNET Download.com editors have already acclaimed … Read more
SAN FRANCISCO--The first bad omen for our experience with Apple's iPhone 3G came late Thursday night, when some of us waiting outside the Apple store here may have insulted a priest.
Sitting on the sidewalk in front of the store, a group of us, giddy with excitement about Apple's new handset, noticed a priest walk by. "Hi, Father," I quipped. "Tomorrow, will you bless our iPhones?"
The priest wasn't amused. Things really took a turn for the worse when someone tried to explain to him why the iPhone was worth the money and … Read more
Okay, this gets a little complicated. More complicated than it should, really.
I am an AT&T customer. My current two-year contract is up on July 30-- just 19 days from now.
Normally, AT&T allows customers to upgrade early by paying a moderate fee.
As CNET's Dawn Kawamoto put it in this blog post, "eligibility for an upgrade discount, the carrier said, is generally determined by amount of time remaining on a current contract and the payment history." One version of the upgrade rules is visible on Best Buy's website.
The worst-case situation, one might suppose, is that… Read more
SAN FRANCISCO AND EMERYVILLE, Calif.--Apple's iPhone 3G just made its debut on the West Coast, and CNET News reporters Erica Ogg, Josh Lowensohn, and yours truly brought offered live updates from our perches in downtown San Francisco and Emeryville, just across the Bay Bridge.
I was at the Stockton Street Apple store in downtown San Francisco, Erica was at the AT&T store a few blocks away at 3rd and Market streets, and Josh was checking out the Bay Street Mall in Emeryville, which has both an Apple store and an AT&T store.
The following … Read more
A lady in front of me at the Salt Lake City Apple Store just bought her spot for $200. (I was lucky - a friend from work saved me a spot, so after changing diapers and cleaning the toilet this morning, I strolled down to my place in line at 8:30. Even so, it has been nearly three hours so far....)
At least the Apple employees have been great. They've been handing out snow cones (see picture at right), water, lawn chairs, etc. The line is atrocious and it's caused by the cumbersome setup process that AT&… Read more
Several bloggers and readers are reporting that when they tried to update the firmware on their iPhones Friday, the devices were "bricked," or rendered unusable.
CNET Blog Network contributor Matt Asay reported around 7 a.m. PDT Friday that when he attempted to use iTunes to update his iPhone, he got an error message and his phone stopped working. He says he can't access contacts or make calls.
CNET News reader Peter8105 reported the same thing Friday morning. Blogger Dave Winer posted the error message he got to his Flickr page Friday morning, and complained of the … Read more
Pandora may be one of the better-known music-discovery apps to premier in the iTunes App Store yesterday (download | review), but it isn't the only free Internet music-streaming and discovery service-turned-iPhone-application out there. One of my iPhone-blessed colleagues here at CNET also heartily recommended AOL Radio.
AOL's channel of recommendations tops the category listings on this simple vertical app, followed by category genres from Alternative to Sports talk and World music. Clicking a category streams content by radio station or by predefined collection. All songs play on a darkened screen powered by CBS Radio. The artist's name and … Read more
Life's not easy for iPhone-enslaved journalists in far-Western time zones. While we wait for our 3G iPhones, happy writers around the world are busily tapping and sliding out their reviews.
Thankfully, we have friends at CNET UK to pass along their iPhone evaluation. CNET UK editor Andrew Lim has this to say in final judgment of the phone:
"Apple has taken the iPhone to the next level and added some truly mouth-watering features. 3G is lightning fast compared to EDGE, and GPS means you'll never get lost again. You still can't send MMS and there'… Read more
SAN FRANCISCO--The perks of being a famous tech blogger include not having to stand in line all night for the latest gadget.
I was out in front of the Apple store near Union Square here at 9 p.m. PDT on Thursday standing in line for the iPhone 3G that makes its debut today. Robert Scoble walks up at 7:15 a.m., 45 minutes before the doors are scheduled to open, and a fan lets him take cuts in line.
It would be easier to be bitter if Scoble wasn't such a nice guy. It's 15 minutes … Read more
