Another government agency is taking interest in Research In Motion's accounting practices.

Following its own internal review of the company's stock options awarded to employees, RIM said Wednesday that it has "had contact with the office of the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York upon learning that the U.S. Attorney's office is reviewing the company's stock option grants." RIM says it plans to cooperate with any requests for information.

Research in Motion finally has offered with an explanation for the outage earlier this week that left "Crackberry" users across North America without access to their e-mail. Though at first the company was slow to explain the outage, which lasted from Tuesday evening through Wednesday morning, RIM yesterday blamed the problem on a minor software upgrade and ruled out any issues with capacity or security.

Engadget Mobile reported a few new details about the BlackBerry 8830 (codenamed Cyclone) today and those details certainly eyebrow-raising. Verizon is rumored to be the carrier, and its suggested release date is May 14 for the business channel and May 29 for the consumer market. Other details include a microSD card slot and a media player that supports...iTunes music.

Oh boy, we've got a BlackBerry down, many BlackBerrys down, in fact. Last night, Research In Motion experienced a widespread system failure that interrupted e-mail delivery to all BlackBerrys in North America. According to the company, the root cause of the meltdown is still under review, but the network is back up and running. Unfortunately, message delivery seems to be due to the backlog of e-mail in the system.

BlackBerry is branching out. Beginning Tuesday, Research In Motion will open the BlackBerry platform further by offering developers APIs (application programming interfaces) that allow them to make more interesting lifestyle-oriented applications.

Having customer relationship management software on your smart phone is cool and all, but soon BlackBerry addicts will have access to applications that are far more consumer oriented: apps with embedded audio and video, more location-based services, support for better 3D graphics, and more customizable wallpaper and ringtones.

The new collection of BlackBerry APIs are based on the industry standard Java Micro Edition.

Good news for all you BlackBerry users out there, as Gameloft announced today it will be bringing its mobile games to everybody's favorite thumb-straining devices. The games will cost about $7 a piece, and covers a range of categories from King Kong to golf.
