The KitKat chocolate bar as we know it was invented in Britain in 1935, and now British owners of unlocked S4 and Note 3 devices can enjoy the chocolatey, wafer-y goodness of Google's very latest software, Android 4.4.2.
Apple has lost the latest round in the ongoing patent war with archrival Samsung.
In the long-running feud between the two companies, Apple had filed a renewed request to permanently ban 23 Samsung devices found to have infringed on its patents. But early Thursday, Judge Lucy Koh denied Apple's request, ruling that the iPhone maker "has not established that it is entitled to the permanent injunction it seeks," according to a court document.
Still, all is not rosy for Samsung. Koh also upheld the $290 million in additional damages awarded to Apple by a jury last November. … Read more

Want to protect your phone calls and data from the feds, hackers, and other snoops? FreedomPop's new Privacy Phone promises to do just that.
Nicknamed the "Snowden phone" after NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, the phone is actually a Samsung Galaxy S2 that FreedomPop rejiggered into a call- and data-encrypting device. Equipped with 128-bit encryption, the phone aims to secure your voice calls and text messages. A built-in virtual private network lets you surf the Web anonymously.
Samsung appears to have a new Chromebook in the works that sports the company's new trademark faux leather cover.
Images tweeted by @evleaks shows what appears to be a Chrome OS-powered notebook featuring a back wrapped in textured fake black leather and framed by stitching on the edges, much like last year's Galaxy Note 3 and the recently announced Black Edition of the Galaxy S4 smartphones. The images, which evleaks identified as a Chromebook 2, features a notebook with the familiar Samsung and Chrome logos.
The two prepaid Sprint brands on Friday announced intentions to carry the flagship device in the second quarter of the year. Neither carrier was ready to disclose a price or specific date; however, the handset will be compatible with Sprint's Spark LTE network.
Historically, high profile devices such as the Galaxy S series take a few months to trickle down to the prepaid brands. But, given the early press announcement, we might be optimistic that the Galaxy S5 bucks the trend and arrives in … Read more
BARCELONA, Spain -- It's been a whirlwind week for our team of reporters at Mobile World Congress: we have taken hundreds of briefings, sat through hours of press conferences and bought you all the news, hands-ons, pictures and video that we could muster.
Today our crack team of 25 took some time out from the hustle and bustle of the show to think about the products, concepts and news stories that have impressed us most over the last week.
Here, in no particular order, are the team's highlights.
Wearable tech you might actually wear Samsung was focussing on … Read more
BARCELONA, Spain -- Unless you were dead-set on a metal design and futuristic features, then Samsung's Galaxy S5 is a worthy successor in the evolving Galaxy S line.
Here at Mobile World Congress, where Samsung introduced its marquee phone to the world, I dove deep into the phone's new fingerprint scanner and heart-rate monitor, tested out the new 16-megapixel camera, and uncovered a few new features of our own.
I know you still have questions, so I've put together a list of some answers. If you've got more, shout them out in the comments … Read more
BARCELONA, Spain --If you spent any time at all hating on the snap-over charging cradle that encompassed the original Samsung Galaxy Gear, you'll be relieved to know that the new Gear family has a smaller charger that clips into each device.
Just as with last year's model, the charger is equipped with Bluetooth and NFC; a tap of a compatible Samsung smartphone or tablet preps … Read more
BARCELONA, Spain -- The Galaxy S5 was announced at an event in Mobile World Congress on Monday, but Samsung surprised those expecting a radical design change by unveiling a phone that looks almost identical to its predecessors, the S3 and S4. I sat down with Samsung's vice president for brand, Stephen Taylor, to ask why.
"I don't think that people need radical re-designs every year," said Taylor. "You have to create a design theme that people identify with. If you came out with a radical design right now, would that have fitted with the … Read more
