Skyfire Web Browser 5.0.1 Review

Many different Web browsers are currently available but few are superior to the stock Web browser found on Android devices. Skyfire Web Browser 5.0 is not an exception to the rule. It is superior in look and feel but does not provide any significant features not found in the built-in browser.

Following a quick installation the first impression of Skyfire Web Browser 5.0 is very good. Users will notice the modern layout and the social media menu at the bottom of the screen. The problems arise however, once the user truly compares it to the default browser or … Read more

Untethered iOS 5.0.1 jailbreak makes it into the wild

It's been a busy week in the realm of iPhone hackery. Earlier today there was the release of an unofficial port of Siri for older iPhones, and now that's joined by an untethered jailbreak for users on Apple's iOS 5.0.1.

The software tweak, which was announced as working by hacker @pod2g earlier this month, works on the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 (both GSM and CDMA), iPad 1, and third- and fourth-generation iPod Touch devices, allowing users to jailbreak their phones. That means users could install third-party applications from places outside of Apple's own App … Read more

iPhone 4 owners can legally get Siri, know-how required

If you own an iPhone 4 and really want Siri on it, a new update has paved the way for you to get your wish.

Apple yesterday launched a new version of its iOS 5.0.1 update that, according to well-known iPhone hacker MuscleNerd, leaves the platform's RAM disks unencrypted. Because of that, those with a little technical know-how can write a script to extract from the software update all the files needed to bring the virtual personal assistant to the iPhone 4.

Apple's update can be automatically downloaded to devices that currently aren't running iOS … Read more

Tweaked iOS 5.0.1 for iPhone 4S released, Apple TV 4.4.4 also

Apple has publicly released two updates today, one a tweaked version of iOS 5.0.1 for iPhone 4S users and the other an update to Apple TV, now version 4.4.4.

The version of iOS 5.0.1 for iPhone 4S users is build 9A406 and does not have any listed changes from the version of iOS 5.0.1, which was released last month in an attempt to solve battery life issues many people had been complaining about.

According to iDownloadBlog.com, this new update now includes decrypted RAM disks, which essentially means that users can write … Read more

iOS 5.0.1 untethered jailbreak confirmed, safe to update

The jailbreak community has completed a safe, untethered jailbreak update for iOS 5.0.1, according to community hacker pod2g, who confirmed the process on his iPhone 4.

While the jailbreak for iOS 5.0.1 was available last week, the untethered version had just been confirmed Sunday by pod2g. As with most jailbreaks, when Apple releases an update to iOS, those who have hacked their phones must wait for the jailbreak community to engineer a suitable upgrade.

If users update their iPhones or iPads before the jailbreak update is ready, they will lose their hacked systems, reverting back to … Read more

Another iOS 5 update to address battery issues?

Apple could be rolling out another iOS 5 update in the next week or so to try again to fix the battery issues with the iPhone 4S, according to reports.

Apple updated its mobile operating operating system to 5.0.1 last week, which apparently fixed the battery drain issues for some iPhone 4S owners, while others complained the problem was unchanged or even worsened in some cases.

Now German site Macerkopf quotes an unnamed Apple engineer saying that another update, 5.0.2, will be out by the end of next week.… Read more

iOS 5.0.1 triggers address book bug for certain users

Apple's iOS 5.0.1 seems to have created a glitch with the Contacts app for certain users, according to various sources and several posts on the Apple Support Forums.

Startup Foundry founder Paul Hontz reported late last week that after updating to 5.0.1, the iPhone was no longer able to associate address book contacts with other apps. Opening the Contacts app would display all the right names. But using the iMessage texting app or even making a phone call would fail to remember the name of a contact and just display the person's phone number.… Read more

iOS 5 battery fix gets mixed reviews--plus more fuel for Apple rumor mill

Apple surprised users this week by delivering its battery-life-fixing update to iOS 5 sooner than expected. But complaints about the problem continued.

The update arrived a little more than a week after Apple first acknowledged that some users were, in fact, running into problems with battery life after upgrading to the newer version of iOS. Apple then promised to deliver a software update to fix the issue, which the company said would be here "in a few weeks."

Instead, the update came just eight days later, on both iTunes and as the first over-the-air update on devices--a feature … Read more

Apple: We're looking into lingering battery complaints

Apple issued a brief statement Friday following reports that some users of the iPhone 4S are continuing to see battery life problems despite a fix released in yesterday's iOS update.

"The recent iOS software update addressed many of the battery issues that some customers experienced on their iOS 5 devices. We continue to investigate a few remaining issues," Apple said in a statement to All Things Digital.

Apple rolled out iOS 5.0.1 yesterday in large part to address the battery-drain situation, but some users say their batteries are still losing charge at a fast rate. … Read more
