Review: Bird Sounds Free puts a call to the bird, but does little else

Bird Sounds Free allows users to learn more about the birds they are looking for, at least sonically-speaking. It's easy to use and provides crystal-clear bird calls.

Bird Songs Free is a fairly basic app, providing a very basic interface and limited features beyond the basic functionality promised in the title. It opens with a grid of bird pictures. None of the birds is labeled, so unless you know your way around a chart of bird pictures, you'll be largely tapping at random. There is no way to know the accuracy of the bird calls in the chart … Read more

The next Angry Birds? Third-party game developers hope Rovio's backing gets them there

Rovio announced on Tuesday its intent to publish the titles of third-party developers, using the marketing success of its top game, Angry Birds, to lure more game makers.

The new program, called Rovio Stars, lets Rovio publish games under its name while promising developers Angry Birds franchise-like glory. Once a gaming company, the now rebranded entertainment company will kick off its program with the launch of Icebreaker: A Viking Voyage by Nitrome, a puzzle game that utilizes slicing motions similar to Cut-the-Rope, and Tiny Thief by 5 Ants, a medieval-themed game featuring stealth-based puzzles.

New Angry Birds clone does a lot of things right, but lacks polish

Stay Alight! (iPhone|iPad) is a destruction game that is somewhat similar to Angry Birds, but in this game, you play as Mr. Bulb and it's your job to take out the monster microbes.

Instead of flinging objects like you would in Angry Birds, with this game you're shooting an energy projectile that bounces off walls. So to get the best trajectory and power, you'll need to both think about where your targets are and how the projectile will bounce through the level to hit as many monster microbes as possible. Like many games in this genre, … Read more

Mozilla Thunderbird for Mac Review

Working with multiple e-mail addresses and inboxes often requires a management client. Mozilla Thunderbird for Mac, despite its dated look, performs well as an open-source e-mail manager.

As an open-source project, this program is available as freeware with no restrictions or payments required. Download and installation occurred quickly and without any problems. After initial setup, which prompted us as to whether the program should be the default email client, Mozilla Thunderbird for Mac welcomed us with a well-designed main interface. Aesthetically, the graphics were dated and would have been appropriate for a program several years old, as opposed to a … Read more
