Samsung SyncMaster S23A550H review: Does DVI still matter?

The Samsung PX2370 review is consistently the most popular monitor review on CNET. Not surprisingly, since it's the monitor I recommend the most, on nearly a daily basis, through other monitor reviews and nearly every monitor-related blog post (kind of like this one).

The PX2370's design, price, performance, and features make it one of the best TN displays we've ever reviewed. As with most hit movies, though, living up to the magic of the first film in a sequel is daunting to say the least.

The Samsung SyncMaster S23A550H, Samsung's 2011 follow-up to the PX2370, thanks … Read more

Macs at times showing static after display sleep

A small but ongoing issue that some Mac users have experienced (1,2) is a problem where upon waking displays from sleep, the system will display a fuzzy snow output to the monitor. This seems to happen predominantly on Mac Pro systems, but has also happened on others such as Mac Mini and iMac systems, though on the iMacs it only happens if a secondary monitor is being used. This problem appears to be an issue with the use of display adapters, and specifically those for converting DisplayPort to DVI connections.

The issue is not related to any particular hardware, … Read more

Get a 23-inch LCD monitor for $129.99

Update:Unfortunately, this deal is sold out now.

Nothing beats a big monitor. (Well, maybe two big monitors.) If you're still plodding along with an old 17-incher or the like, it's high time for an upgrade.

TigerDirect has the AOC 2330V 23-inch LCD monitor for $129.99, plus around $9 for shipping. This is a new unit, not a refurb, and you don't have to mess with any rebates. I've seen 22-inch monitors this low, but never a 23-incher.

The 2330V offers full 1080p resolution (i.e. 1,920 x 1,080), and its DVI input … Read more

Apple to include HDMI on new Macs?

According to a report on AppleInsider, Apple may be planning to include HDMI connectivity on new Macs, most notably the Mac Mini. The report suggests the addition of HDMI to the Mac Mini, and eventually other Mac models, relates to Apple's continued interest in the "living room media server" area.… Read more

Snow Leopard showing up in black and white on televisions when connected via DVI to S-Video adapter

Users have expressed frustrations with Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard appearing in black and white when they connect their computers to their televisions with Apple's DVI to S-Video adapter.

Apple Support Discussions user "irfanhab" reports:

"I use a DVI to S-Video adaptor (bought from Apple Store) to connect my macbook pro (Feb 2008 model) to a Digital TV. Every time I connected it used to work fine and I could instantly play movies. However in Snow leopard, every time I connect the TV display is Black and White, and I have to restart my … Read more

As HDMI rises, DVI falls

It seems almost inconceivable that just five years ago I purchased a digital TV without a high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) port. Today virtually every computer monitor that comes through CNET's testing labs has an HDMI port, even the smallish 22-inchers. Some even only come with an HDMI port, forgoing the DVI port altogether.

The rapid rise in HDMI integration by vendors isn't just my imagination, either. In-Stat has released a new report on the quick adoption of HDMI and Digital Visual Interface's (DVI) slow decline.

According to the report, HDMI ports were found in 95 percent of … Read more

Connect your monitors via USB and save the planet?

According to DisplayLink, a Microsoft Research study says that using two or more displays can increase productivity by as much as 50 percent. The company also notes that University of Utah researchers have shown that users of multiple displays make up to 33 percent fewer mistakes than those working on a single monitor.

Now, in its own study released Wednesday, DisplayLink says that using multiple monitors simultaneously via USB consumes less power than using them via DVI. To plug multiple monitors into one system traditionally requires that you use a discrete graphics card solution with dual DVI ports. Right away that's theoretically more power, since discrete solutions take more energy to run than integrated solutions. With DisplayLink, you'd simply be using the USB port to connect, so there would be no need for a dual DVI card and the integrated graphics would suffice.

At Interop, an IT conference and Exposition in New York this week, DisplayLink is leaning on its study results to push the energy efficiency of using DisplayLink to connect multiple monitors via USB.

In its study, DisplayLink measured the power needed for a desktop PC to run one to four LCD monitors. Two identically configured systems were used--one equipped with DisplayLink-enabled USB-to-DVI adapters and software, and another with dual-DVI discrete graphics cards (the most common type of dedicated multidisplay board). Power consumption was measured at the entry of the computer power supply to gauge total system power usage under different system loads. … Read more
