It was only a matter of time before Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, R2-D2, and the rest of the gang from a galaxy far, far away invaded Tumblr. While beloved "Star Wars" characters have shown up in millions of memes, animated GIFs, and probably quite a few fan fiction entries on the popular blogging site, this week marks Vader's official presence thanks to Lucasfilm and Disney Interactive.
Instagram's "magazine-like" ads are totally double-tap worthy -- at least that's the message the Facebook-owned entity is telling everyone.
Thursday, Instagram shared results from its first four ad campaigns and touted that early guinea pigs like Levi's and Ben & Jerry's reached more than 7 million people in the US in just over a week with their sponsored photos.
Most of Instagram's revelations are cloaked in advertising jargon, making them hard to unravel. The company said, for instance, that across the four campaigns there was a 32-point incremental lift in ad recall per … Read more

When the daughter of British rock star Bob Geldof took a photo of herself and her son Astala, a ghostly interloper seemed to get in on the act.
An unexplainable image of a mysterious hand appeared on socialite Peaches Geldof's shoulder when she took the photo of herself and her son in the bath. When she posted the photo on Instagram she wrote:
"Close up shot of the mystery ghost hand in pic I took of Astala and me in the bath!! And no that isn't my hand -- one of mine was round his waist to hold him during the photo, the other holding the camera to take the shot. Also the hand is around my shoulder so totally weird angle if I did it myself!! How terrifying!!" … Read more
I am blue in the face.
But it doesn't matter how many times you tell people -- especially criminals -- to be very careful about what they post on social networks. They don't listen.
Here is the story of Depree Johnson. He's 19, and he's already been in a little trouble.
However, he's now in 142 times more trouble, all because he couldn't help posting Instagram images of himself with those twins of modern despair: guns and money. (Johnson's Instagram account -- duce22ceritfied (sic) -- has now been shut down.)… Read more
Early on Thursday Instagram announced a new feature called Instagram Direct. The new feature allows users to privately share photos or videos with up to 15 people. Obviously this is a new direction for Instagram, as previously sharing a photo was an all-or-nothing act.

A little unsolicited advice to tech companies wanting to hold an event: Bring something at least moderately interesting or new to the table.
Otherwise, you end up like Instagram, which on Thursday unveiled Instagram Direct, its take on the direct and instant messaging feature that's available on virtually every other major service. The moment was, to say the least, disappointing.

He also noted that, in general, photos taken have more than quadrupled from 86 billion in 2000 to 360 billion in 2011.
The main event of the press conference was the unveiling of Instagram Direct messaging.

Ahead of the event, it was unclear just what the photo-sharing social network would announce, and speculation ranged from a photo-printing service -- based on the odd form of the invitations … Read more
Instagram is now offering Instagram Direct, the ability to send images to users, instead of broadcasting your photos publicly.
The photo-sharing network's CEO, Kevin Systrom, reiterated that Instagram is not about photography, but about communication.
"If we were about photography, we'd be built into cameras," he said at a press conference in New York on Thursday. "But, we're not built into cameras. We're built into phones."
Users will be able to send photos or videos directly to up to 15 people at a time. To share the image privately, you can use … Read more
