Milk gone sour? There's an app for that

We all know the feeling of opening up the fridge and grabbing the milk, only to discover that the white liquid has a horrible sour smell indicating it's gone bad. Wouldn't it be great to be alerted about that while at the office so you can stop at the store on the way home?

Now there's an app for that, along with what the developers of a new technology are calling the "milk jug of the future": the Milkmaid. … Read more

Digg founder Kevin Rose new Google Ventures partner

Digg founder Kevin Rose has become the newest partner at Google Ventures.

Google bought Rose's incubator Milk in March, and at the time, it appeared he would be working on Google+.

But now, according to All Things D, Rose will be coming aboard the search giant's venture arm.

In an email to CNET, Google Ventures confirmed Rose's new position.

Rose has been a tech star for years. He first made waves at TechTV, and became more prominent on various Revision3 shows. But it was Digg, a system that allowed Internet users to rank stories' popularity, that made … Read more

Digg, Milk founder Kevin Rose said to have joined Google

Serial entrepreneur Kevin Rose, whose past project list includes the social news site Digg and the now-defunct microblogging service Pownce, is now said to be a Google employee.

According to "sources close to the situation" AllThingsD reports that Rose, along with a number of his employees from his startup incubator Milk have been hired by Google.

Google declined to comment, and Rose did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the initial report.

Rose jumped into tech stardom at an early age, appearing on TechTV and later a number of online shows through Revision3. His breakout … Read more

Oink shuts down

Kevin Rose's startup mill, Milk, is shuttering its first product, the item review app Oink. The app was only live for three months.

Oink was well-reviewed here and elsewhere. Users who became attached to the app (or, like me, who reviewed it seriously) may not have been fully aware that Rose himself wasn't committed to it. As the shut-down notice on the Oink.com page says.

We started Milk Inc. to rapidly build and test out new ideas. Oink was our first test and, in preparing to move onto the next project, we've decided to shut it … Read more

Muscle-covered leggings take the skin out of skintight

We've got just the tights to wear to your upcoming anatomy exam.

With these "Muscles Leggings"--whipped up by designer James Lillis for Black Milk Clothing--there's no way you'll fail (at least not when it comes to the waist-down part of the test).

Then again, it might be more fun to think about slipping into these the next time you visit one of those Body Worlds-type exhibits--you know, the ones with real flayed bodies riding horses or playing basketball? How many people would frantically hail a security guard to report an errant artifact?

Or you could don them for that other, hands-on anatomy class of yours--the one with the cadavers and instrument trays--and run teary-eyed to the instructor crying, "Damn it! I told you Bart needed glasses!"

The possibilities for pranking seem plentiful.… Read more

Facebook gets 6,600-pound chocolate thumbs-up

Reaching 1 million Facebook fans was a big deal for Cadbury Dairy Milk in the U.K. It was such a big deal that Cadbury stacked 6,600 pounds of Dairy Milk bars into the shape of a giant Facebook "Like" thumbs-up.

The edible hand took two days to build. The crew dressed in matching purple tops, making them look suspiciously like escaped Oompa Loompas.

According to the time-lapse video, there were some worrying moments during construction, but the thumbs-up managed not to squish anybody. A Facebook fan named Denise had the honor of putting the last piece of chocolate into place.

Cadbury offered some handy comparison charts to give fans an idea of just how large the hand is. It's as tall as two small cars or six rockhopper penguins standing on each other's heads. It weighs as much as 24 baby elephants.… Read more

Simplify your grocery shopping on Android

Grocery shopping--it can be fun, annoying, relaxing, or done in a rush, but it is always necessary. So why not use a grocery app for your phone that can help make the process go smoother every time? While the number of grocery apps in the Android Market is mind-boggling, the amount of features per app varies greatly. Out of Milk is relatively balanced on features, ease of use, and quality in comparison to many others. Here's how to use it to simplify the necessary task of grocery shopping:

Step 1: Grab Out of Milk from the … Read more

Breastfeeding truck coming to a city near you?

What would you do if you saw an ice cream truck with a giant boob--nipple and all--on its roof?

You'd probably do a double-take. Then, tell your kids to stay away because they can't buy ice cream from it. It's not an ice cream truck, after all. It's The Milk Truck, an on-call mobile breastfeeding vehicle that performance artist and mom Jill Miller would like to turn into a reality.

Miller--a faculty member at the School of Art at Pittsburgh's Carnegie Mellon University--is looking to raise $10,000 in funding through pledge site Kickstarter. If the breastfeeding crusader succeeds, nursing moms in the Pittsburgh area (and eventually beyond, Miller hopes) will never have to worry about finding a private spot to pump or nurse again.

"There's a reason for making The Milk Truck," Miller writes on her Web site. "To create a mobile breastfeeding unit that allows mothers to feed their babies in places where they have been discouraged: restaurants, shopping malls, public spaces, etc. Babies should be able to eat anywhere. And everywhere." … Read more

Breast-milk ice cream: Test before you taste?

In February, the uber trendy Icecreamists boutique in London began serving a scoop of ice cream straight from the supple breasts of London mother Victoria Hiley. Her milk was screened at what parlor founder Matt O'Connor calls a "leading medical clinic" before being pasteurized and served in a martini glass with lemon zest and vanilla pods for 14 pounds, or about $22.50.

Not for long. News of the unusual dessert, dubbed Baby Gaga, swept across the Interwebs, and when two people complained to Westminster Council (perhaps notably, both were men), officers removed the product from the … Read more

The best-sounding music of 2010

I complain about bad recordings all the time, but there's lots of great-sounding music coming out. Here's a short list of the highlights from the past 12 months.

"Treme: Music From the HBO Original Series, Season 1"

Most soundtrack music is either old tunes or recorded in studios, but "Treme," HBO's series about New Orleans just a few months after Katrina, uses lots of live music recorded on the streets and in the city's clubs. The brass bands swing like crazy, and the funk grooves aren't too shabby. The sound feels … Read more
