Sony announces quartet of low-cost car stereos

Yesterday, Sony added four new single-DIN in-dash receivers to its Xplod line of car audio equipment, replacing last year's CDX-GT line. The new CDX-GT650UI, CDX-GT550UI, CDX-GT350MP, and CDX-GT250MP will all be available in the coming weeks with prices ranging from $80 for the most basic GT250MP to $160 for the most fully-featured unit, the GT650UI.

The top-of-the-line CDX-GT650UI and CDX-GT550UI have USB ports on their faceplates to connect with iPods, iPhones, Sony's Walkman, and other USB mass storage devices, as well as analog auxiliary inputs. Both units also feature Sony's ZAPPIN, Quick-BrowZer, and Jump Mode search technologies … Read more

Sony Xplod car stereos to get TomTom sat-navs

Sony's just busted out two new car stereos that feature built-in TomTom satellite navigation.

The Xplod XNV-L77BT and XNV-L66BT in-dash head units feature 7-inch and 6.1-inch displays respectively and take advantage of a wealth of TomTom Live services you don't get with bog-standard sat-navs.

Those with a head for speed should find the HD Traffic and Safety Alerts features particularly useful, as they help drivers avoid traffic jams and provide advanced warnings about speed cameras and accident black spots.

Both devices also include TomTom's Local Search with Google--a service that lets users find and interact with … Read more

Sony expands Tune Tray car audio offerings

Back at CES 2010, we got a look at the Sony DSX-S100, a car stereo that distinguished itself with a feature called the Tune Tray--a sort of tiny, built-in glove compartment for stashing your portable media player of choice. Sony announced Thursday that it's adding two more Tune Tray models to its Xplod line of car stereos: the DSX-S200X and the DSX-S300BT.

The DSX-S200X inherits all the features of the DSX-S100, including a monochromatic OLED display, the all-important Tune Tray with its internal USB connection, and the omission of a CD player. The S200X then adds a second USB … Read more

Sony expands Xplod line of in-dash receivers

Sony is expanding its mobile-audio lineup with eight new Xplod in-dash CD receivers. Of these new models, three offer built-in Bluetooth connectivity and seven feature USB ports--five of which are iPod compatible. Also among these new models is Sony Xplod's first double DIN receiver in years.

Starting with top-tier model being added to Sony's GT line of car stereos, with the high-end CDX-GT930UI features a rear USB connection for iPod, iPhone, Walkman, and other USB devices, as well as a rear aux-in. Out back, you'll also find four-volt front, rear and sub preamp outputs. On the business … Read more

Sony updates Xplod line with ZAPPIN tech, iPod connectivity

In addition to its announcement of new navigation units, Sony announced four new car stereo receivers on Wednesday.

At the top of the new lineup is the CDX-GT630UI ($160), a unit that Sony touts as its first car stereo that connects to iPods/iPhones and USB devices via a USB connection. Our experience is that in the past, Sony head units either supported USB or iPod via a 30-pin dock connector, but not both. Interestingly, the GT630UI's USB port appears to be located directly on the faceplate, which solves the problem of routing a USB pigtail during installation and … Read more

Sony Xplod CDX-GT920U-- in-dash car stereo

Easy on the eyes, the Sony Xplod CDX-GT920U sits close to the top of Sony's line of single DIN head units. The GT920U proves to be much more than just a pretty face, as it's packed with input options, including a rear USB input and a menu system that makes it a breeze to find the right song for the moment.

Four new car stereos from Sony

In all the brouhaha of Sony's announcements on Blu-ray burners and Internet-connected TV, it's easy to miss the real news from the technology giant at CES: the unveiling of four new single-DIN stereo head units. Following the trend to USB inputs we've seen elsewhere, three of Sony's new stereos come with USB 2.0 ports built into the faceplates. Although, unlike new stereos we have seen this week from Pioneer, the Sony players will only play back files from a thumbdrive or from a digital walkman (not from iPods, Zunes, or other digital music players, according … Read more
