Game firm's Facebook app for virtual assassinations gets offed

We all live with the consequences of our finest ideas.

Or the ones that seemed the finest at the time.

I am confident that when the fine minds at Square Enix created Hire Hitman they had a sense that it would prove popular with men who are boys and boys who think they are men.

After all, this little Facebook app -- launched to promote the no doubt very fine and possibly religious computer game Hitman: Absolution -- allowed you to peg a friend as the target of a virtual hit by the computer game's protagonist, Agent 47, and share a video of the friend's termination, which incorporated a photo of the friend from his or her profile. … Read more

Lojack recovers your laptop, without risking your neck

Your security app gives you the longitude and latitude of your stolen tech, but is it wise to confront a tech thief on your own? And how do you get your neighborhood cops to care about your stolen $300 phone?

The publisher of Lojack for Laptops and its new Android counterpart, Theft Recovery, says that it provides more than device tracking. Canada-based Absolute Software claims that its 17 years of experience in the field and connections to local law enforcement agencies make it the best option for device recovery, too.

"Consumer vigilantism and tech are now enabling consumers to … Read more

From groovy turntables to tasty wines at Newport Beach's T.H.E. Show

High-end audio shows are a great way to see and hear the very best gear. I'm getting good feedback about the goings-on at T.H.E. Show: Newport being held this weekend at the Hilton Hotel at the Orange County Airport in California.

There are oodles of outrageously priced, groovy turntables; gorgeous amplifiers; and statuesque speakers on display; and lots of great music to buy. More than 100 high-end audio companies will be demonstrating their best products in rooms throughout the hotel.

T.H.E. Show: Newport is also presenting a series of seminars on computer audio; tips on … Read more

One-of-a-kind Tesla Roadster art car on display

Adding another project to his "auto" biography, artist Laurence Gartel has designed a one-of-a-kind Tesla Roadster art car.

Gartel, who is known for his pioneering work in digital media, has shown in New York's Museum of Modern Art and other renowned museums and galleries and has work included in the Smithsonian Institution's Museum of American History. Gartel has also published several books, including "Auto Motion," which coincided with a fully digital 3D fine-art sculpture exhibition of the same name.

Northern California electric automaker Tesla collaborated with Gartel on the unique design. BMW has been collaborating with famous artists for years on numerous art cars.

The Roadster will be featured tonight at Gartel's Art Basel festival in Miami Beach. The car is for sale for $109,000, but because it features a wrap, the buyer will have to negotiate the price of the wrap with the artist, Tesla said. The car will be in and around Miami Beach all week.

Report: Music insider site source of leaked songs

It's an article of faith in the music industry that pre-release album leaks hurt sales. I don't have the statistics to argue the case in either direction, but it makes sense on a gut level: there's less reason for fans to run out and buy a new record, when they already have the uncompressed files on their hard drives.

As if the record industry hasn't tasted enough bitter irony lately, a bunch of album leaks over the weekend apparently came from a service used by music labels to share files with radio stations, media, and other … Read more

A library of errors

Absolute Media Library is a basic program for keeping track of all types of collections. Although it offers a lot of options for organization, its incessant error messages make it hard to like.

The program's interface is simple, and although it's not the most intuitive, it's easy enough to figure out. You can enter media of all sorts, specifying format, genre, value, and other details. In addition to keeping an inventory of items, you can create a database of borrowers and keep track of items that get loaned out, which is a nice feature to have in … Read more

Who invented high-end audio?

Harry Pearson, who coined the term "high end," spoke at the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest 2009, held last week in Denver. "High end" has long since spread to cars, cameras, jewelry, real estate, boats, and a gazillion other categories, but audio is where it all started.

Pearson's magazine The Absolute Sound, The High End Journal, and J. Gordon Holt's Stereophile magazine created an audiophile community.

Starting in 1973, Pearson's flamboyant writing style and deep love of gear and music helped prod the state of the art forward through the 1980s. The Absolute Sound's tiny circulation and sporadic publishing schedule didn't hurt its prestige and importance in the industry. A rave review, especially by Pearson, could put a start-up company on the map.

Pearson made people curious about, well, the absolute sound. That is, the sound of musicians and vocalists, recorded in an appropriate acoustic space. We all wanted a hi-fi system good enough to put us in that space. That's impossible, but the goal, reproducing the absolute sound, still drives at least some audiophiles.… Read more

Intuitive uninstaller

Absolute Uninstaller is an intuitive program that promises to remove software components that the Windows Add or Remove Programs function cannot. The program's ease of use and effectiveness make it a great choice for this task.

First, let's talk about what Absolute Uninstaller doesn't do. If your computer is already a mess of cyber junk, Absolute Uninstaller isn't going to clean it up for you. We had multiple folders in our Program Files that should have been removed along with the program they came with, and Absolute Uninstaller couldn't help us with those. The program'… Read more
