Based on channel checks in November, the company has found "very strong sales" of the iPhone 5 at AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint, as well as in international markets. Given the checks, as well as Apple's strong plans for an iPhone 5 ramp to 240 carriers in 100 countries by year's end, including China, Canaccord has slightly increased its estimates for iPhone sales in the December quarter.… Read more
The iPhone 4S was the top selling smartphone at all three of its U.S. carriers last month, but Samsung kept nipping at Apple's heels, according to investment firm Canaccord Genuity.
All three models of the iPhones 4S (16GB, 32GB, and 64GB) grabbed strong sales and a higher market share in the U.S. last month, with a little help from Black Friday and Cyber Monday. But so did Samsung's Galaxy S II.
Samsung's latest smartphone was the top seller at T-Mobile and the second best-selling smartphone at both AT&T and Sprint. The Galaxy S … Read more
Research In Motion is stuck between an Apple and an Ice Cream Sandwich.
After some initial excitement for the new line of BlackBerry 7 smartphones and a strong launch--both unusual for RIM for the past year--sales are starting to sputter. That's according to Canaccord Genuity analyst T. Michael Walkley, who said his checks indicate a slowing trend for BlackBerrys.
It's likely sales have been blunted by the release of the iPhone 4S, as well as the lower price of the legacy iPhone 4 and 3GS models as well. The coming release of the Galaxy Nexus and phones running … Read more
Apple's mobile products seem to be so popular that even older models are outselling the competition, according to reports from investment firm Canaccord Genuity.
In a series of research notes sent to investors earler this week, technology analyst Michael Walkley shared his findings on how Apple fared in the mobile retail market in April. The analyst confirmed that the iPhone 4 was the top-selling smartphone at both AT&T and Verizon last month, while iPad 2 sales stayed strong as consumers overwhelmingly chose it in favor of rival tablets.
But thanks to discounted prices, even the iPhone 3GS and the first-generation iPad are outselling the competition, according to Walkley. Specifically, the iPhone 3GS outsold both the Motorola Atrix 4G and the HTC Inspire 4G at AT&T, while the 16GB and 32GB original iPads were sold out at Verizon less than two weeks following the debut of the iPad 2.
"Interestingly, our April checks indicated continued strong demand for the iPhone 3GS at AT&T and iPad 1 at Verizon, as these older generation products with reduced prices often outsold new Android products," wrote Walkley in his note. "We believe this highlights Apple's significant competitive advantage, and these older products help Apple offer a tiered pricing strategy at key channels and the older Apple products are still very competitive versus new competitor products."… Read more
Apple turns a significantly bigger profit from each smartphone it sells than do handset makers in general, giving the company a huge chunk of the overall market's profits, according to an analyst's assessment.
Apple analyst T. Michael Walkley of investment firm Canaccord Genuity said in a note to investors this week that Apple sees a gross margin of 50 percent and operating margins of around 30 percent on its iPhone. That's within an industry where most handset makers struggle to turn a profit, or reach operating margins of even 10 percent.
As a result, he said, Apple … Read more
