Clear intros 4G mobile hot-spot router with unlimited data plans

Of all 4G mobile Internet access devices, the Clear 4G+ modem is arguably the best deal. It's neither the fastest nor the cheapest, but it offers consistent performance (as tested around California) and, most importantly, comes with affordable unlimited data plans.

Unfortunately, as a modem, it provides Internet access only to the single computer it's plugged into. Now that's about to change. Clear announced today the Clear 4G-Apollo, a mobile router that offers similar 4G Internet access to up to eight Wi-Fi clients.

Like all mobile hot-spot routers, the Apollo connects to a cellular wireless network by … Read more

Clear 4G+ Mobile Series S USB modem delivers

LAS VEGAS--I reviewed the Clear 4G+ Mobile Series S USB modem right before the holidays, and people have been asking me how it performs outside of the San Francisco Bay Area (CNET's home base). CES 2011 seemed like the perfect opportunity to find out.

Las Vegas during CES is congested, both in terms of traffic and cellular signals. There are hundreds of thousands of people here in the city, each with at least one Internet-connected handheld device. These devices connect to the Net via 3G, 4G, or GPRS (or Edge) signal. If you want to know how a cell … Read more

Clear 4G+ modem review: Mobile Internet delight

I recently reviewed Verizon's VL600 4G USB modem and found it a painful conundrum that the modem is superspeedy and yet Verizon's data plans are superlimited (and expensive). That problem is solved with Clear's 4G+ Mobile Series S USB modem.

This modem is very similar to the VL600 in that it offers extremely fast Internet access using cellular signals.

However, it has a few advantages. First of all, it's more compact, has a swiveling USB head (which would fit in any USB port, even hard-to-reach ones), and comes with a port for an external antenna. It … Read more

Clearwire extends 4G rollout to five more markets

Clearwire has expanded its 4G service to five more markets.

Starting today, customers in Los Angeles, Miami, Cincinnati, Cleveland, and Columbus, Ohio, can access Clearwire's 4G service.

The addition of 4G coverage to those cities isn't much of a surprise. Earlier this year, Clearwire said it planned on bringing its service to the cities, but didn't provide an exact time frame for the rollout. The company also said at the time that it hopes to cover 120 million people across the United States by year's end.

But if it wants to hit that mark, it has … Read more

Clearwire unveils largest WiMax test area

Clearwire Communications has created a sandbox more than 20 square miles in size where developers can play with WiMax.

Clearwire announced on Tuesday the launch of the largest test area yet for its 4G WiMax service in Silicon Valley. Covering a wide area from Santa Clara to Mountain View to parts of Palo Alto, the company's Clear 4G WiMAX Innovation Network will let developers test the mobile broadband network on a large scale.

First announced in April by Clearwire, the Clear 4G WiMAX Innovation Network is seen as a testbed to prepare for the launch of commercial WiMax service … Read more
