Two new Nook Colors coming this year?

Right on top of word that Amazon will be unveiling a new Kindle or a new Android tablet on September 28, The Digital Reader blog says it got its hands on a PowerPoint slide that indicates that Barnes & Noble will be releasing two new tablets this year.

Rumors have been percolating for a while that the Nook Color would be upgraded around the one-year anniversary of its release (October 26, 2010). But this latest rumor has Barnes & Noble releasing that $249 product, dubbed the Encore, as well as a second $349 model, the Acclaim.

LG Encore available from AT&T

Though AT&T didn't officially announce it, the carrier put the LG Encore for sale on its Web site on Sunday, September 5. The touch-screen phone uses LG's proprietary operating system. The Encore is a quad-band GSM/EDGE phone with dual-band 850/1,900Mhz 3.6Mbps HSDPA 3G, A-GPS, an accelerometer, a 3.5mm headset jack, a microSD card slot that takes up to 16GB cards, and Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP support. Shazam iPhone app gets premium Encore

The popular music discovery app Shazam is about to receive an Encore on the iPhone and iPod Touch. Shazam Encore for iPhone is a premium application, first introduced to Windows Mobile users last month at CTIA Wireless. Starting Monday, Shazam Encore will also be available for iPhone.

Shazam retrieves music information about a recorded song by listening to and recording from the music's source. The app returns details, links for buying a song, and social networking features that let you share the songs you had Shazam tag on Facebook and Twitter.

Intel spins out telecom portion of optical-networking group

Intel continues to move further and further away from its communications experiments as it refocuses on the things it does best.

The company agreed to sell the telecommunications portion of its Optical Platform Division to Emcore, a chipmaker for the telecom industry, for $85 million. This includes a bunch of technology that doesn't really fit into Intel's historical strengths, such as tunable lasers for telecom products.
