How Navy supercomputers help sailors beat an ancient nemesis

MONTEREY, Calif.--One after another, the framed pictures on both walls of the narrow hallway tell the story: submarines and naval ships churning white wakes as they slash through open ocean, each photo accompanied by unbidden gratitude.

"Thank you for your team's efforts & hard work! You ensure my safety and enhance my tactical advantage," one reads.

Welcome to the U.S. Navy's Fleet Numerical Meteorology & Oceanography Center. That long-and-hard-to-say name notwithstanding, this is one of the United States military's sharpest weapons in the never-ending battle for survival in rough seas all around the … Read more

Fitness app Fleetly aims to make workouts a game

So you want to lose weight? Train for a marathon? Swim faster? With 9,000 health apps in Apple's iOS App Store--with such titles as RunKeeper for runners, Strava for cyclists, and Gain Fitness for weight lifters--the health app market can appear pretty bloated. And most apps are built with a specific activity in mind.

A former triathlete, Geoff Pitfield wanted to build an app that could track his varied exercise and rate his overall fitness level. That's why he created Fleetly, a health-tracking service that launched last week on iOS devices.

Built using game design elements, Fleetly … Read more

Fleet owners push the pedal on alternative fuels

NORWOOD, Mass.--Trucks and other fleet vehicles are the unsung heroes in the move to alternative fuels.

Operators of fleet vehicles are important leading-edge users of everything from electric cars to natural gas-fueled trucks, say auto industry analysts. As more auto technologies come to market, fleet operators expect that each will fill a specific role, rather than have one technology fit every need, fleet operators said yesterday at the AltWheels Annual Fleet Day here.

All-electric delivery trucks used for city routes, for example, are more comfortable to drive and are cheaper to fuel compared to convention diesel trucks. Hybrids, meanwhile, … Read more

A Star Wars video game unlike any other

Video games tend to be more enjoyable on a large screen, but what happens when you harness the power of a 20-foot-wide multitouch display that runs at 8,160x2,304 resolution? Some incredible pew pew.

Fleet Commander, designed by computer science grad student Arthur Nishimoto and developed at the Electronic Visualization Laboratory at the University of Illinois in Chicago, is perhaps the most tantalizing "Star Wars" concept game ever made.

Under development for several years, it currently harnesses the power of a giant multitouch LCD wall to "explore how a real-time interactive strategy game that would typically rely on complex keyboard commands and mouse interactions [could] be transferred into a multi-user, multitouch environment," according to EVL. Fingers are tracked via TacTile software. … Read more

Study: Fleet buyers can jump-start plug-in vehicles

While it's unclear how many consumers are willing to pay more for plug-in electric cars, the case for fleet operators is a lot simpler to make, according to advocacy group the Electrification Coalition.

The group, made up of CEOs from the auto and electric power industries, today released a road map for fleet electrification in which it argues that corporate fleets can help make plug-in vehicles more commonplace. The document, prepared in an effort to influence policy, was released by members at a press conference in Washington, D.C.

Navistar eStar electric delivery trucks get rolling

Some U.S. city dwellers will soon have their packages delivered by electric-powered trucks.

Truck-maker Navistar on Thursday officially unveiled its eStar medium-size electric delivery truck, four of which will be tested by FedEx in the Los Angeles areas.

The truck can go 100 miles on its batteries which can be charged overnight or removed and replaced with fresh ones, according to Navistar. The company expects to ship 400 of the vehicles to delivery companies or municipalities by the end of this year.

Because of its limited range and because batteries are recharged while slowing down or braking, the truck … Read more

Vehicle maintenance manager

Fleet Maintenance Pro Deluxe provides users with a way to manage large numbers of vehicles and all their scheduled maintenance. While its versatility is excellent, the amount of work required to keep it accurate may turn some operators off.

The program's interface mimics an Excel spreadsheet and should not seem too mysterious to users. While there are several command icons along the top and bottom of the screen, a little experimentation and a trip to the Help file should help bring anyone up to speed. Managing your fleet of vehicles is simple but tedious. Inputting new vehicles is easy … Read more

Digital postcards and an online flight sim: iPhone apps of the week

Of all the great enhancements, fixes, and goodies in iPhone OS 3.0 (video overview here), I quickly realized there was one glaring omission. With the useful addition of a Voice Memos app, an old problem reared its ugly head. The update put the Voice Memos app icon on the home page, pushing whatever lone app icon that sat in the lower right of the homepage onto its own screen on the next page. This meant that in order to maximize my use of page space (I have a lot of apps!), I now had to rearrange my apps on … Read more
