Google defends hosting site under attack by MPAA

The battle of Silicon Valley vs. Hollywood continues.

Google filed a brief earlier this month in federal court in Florida defending Hotfile, an Internet locker service that the Motion Picture Association of America accuses of acting as a clearinghouse for pirated films.

The MPAA filed suit against Hotfile a year ago, arguing that the cyberlocker has made a business out of offering a stash box for people to store their pirated movies. Warner Bros. denies abusing DMCA in Hotfile case

LOS ANGELES--An online locker service accused by some of Hollywood's biggest film studios of "massive copyright violations," has made counter claims that generated a lot of press attention last week.

Hotfile, a Florida-based online storage service sued by the studios in February, alleges that one of its accusers, Warner Bros. Entertainment, made numerous false copyright claims as part of attempt to remove content from Hotfile's site.

MPAA sues Hotfile, battle for cloud begins

For the first time, a group of Hollywood film studios has filed a copyright lawsuit against a cyberlocker.

File-hosting service Hotfile has made a business out of offering a stash box for people to store their pirated movies, the Motion Picture Association of America claims in its suit against Hotfile.

"In less than two years, Hotfile has become one of the 100 most trafficked sites in the world," the MPAA said in a press release issued today. "That is a direct result of the massive digital theft that Hotfile promotes."
