Aerofex: Hover bike fit for buzzing around Endor

When it comes to things from "Star Wars" that I'd like to see in reality, my list includes Ewoks, R2-D2, Wookies, and speeder bikes. Looks like I'll have to settle for a sort-of speeder bike.

The Aerofex hover bike has been in development for some years now, but recent test-flight videos have arrived showing it fully functioning over a dry lake bed in a desert.

The Aerofex uses two ducted fans rather than wheels. The rider's leaning controls the direction of the bike. One of the project's goals is to create a natural-feeling riding experience, much like being on a motorcycle.… Read more

Is this Hover Car the next people's car?

When you think of a basic, affordable vehicle that everyone can buy, a hover car doesn't immediately come to mind. But that's what emerged from the People's Car Project launched by Volkswagen in China last year.

Volkswagen, which translates to "people's car" in English, challenged China residents to submit their ideas of what the car of the future should look like. The company sifted through more than 119,000 ideas submitted to the project Web site and compiled three concepts, including the Hover Car.

The Hover Car is a two-seater zero-emissions vehicle that hovers … Read more

Simple tray calendar

QuickMonth Calendar is just the sort of freeware we love to see; it's compact, simple, and focused on its task. It does one thing: it pops up a calendar display near the system tray when you hover the cursor over the system time and date display. Calendars may be the most easily overdone feature in the software universe, integrating everything from note keepers to obscure historical facts to musical alerts when, 99 percent of the time, all you want to do is look at the calendar. Even the decent Windows tray calendar requires mouse clicks to open and close, … Read more

Smoother Mac scrolling

Smart Scroll is a handy preference pane that can give you much more flexibility with trackpad, mouse (and Magic Mouse), and keyboard scrolling, including coasting iPhone-style scrolling.

Smart Scroll works in the background, but its settings interface gives you extensive control over its five primary features: the iPhone-style "Super Scroll" that lets the content of a window continue scrolling even after you let go of your trackpad or mouse (you can easily control the speed and amount of "coasting," stop with two fingers, and even reverse the x and y axis to match the iPhone); the &… Read more

TrueTouch adds hover feature to touch screens

Can you still call a touch screen a touch screen if you don't have to physically touch the panel to register a command? Apparently, yes. Cypress' new hover-detection feature for capacitive touch screens lets you do exactly that. In other words, you don't actually need to touch the display to zoom in on a Web page or enlarge certain points of interest on a map. As your finger moves closer to the screen, the corresponding onscreen bubble (magnifying glass of sort) grows bigger.

This whole proximity sensor concept looks eerily similar to what Apple patented recently. Then again, … Read more

Official NASA app and a hovercraft racing game: iPhone apps of the week

Is the iPhone finally coming to Verizon? According to an article over at Apple Insider, sources in the Taiwan handset supply chain say Apple has contracted to produce a UMTS/CDMA hybrid iPhone, making it compatible with more networks worldwide. The sources say the move indicates that Apple is specifically targeting Verizon and that we may see Verizon iPhones by the end of next year.

Whenever I talk to anyone about the iPhone, they always say the same thing; they love the device, but wish that AT&T had better coverage. I happen to agree, because even where I … Read more

A hovercraft to mow your lawn

The next frontier in technology may be your lawn. Well, that may be a slight exaggeration, but we're definitely seeing more products aimed at helping modern suburbanites be the envy of the Joneses and everyone else in the 'hood.

Just a few days ago we wrote of the "Droplet Electric Mower/Mulcher"--which, despite its painfully utilitarian name, sports a beautiful design created by Australian artist Ashley Marsh-Croft. Now, according to EcoGeek, a U.K. company named Flymo has created a line of hovering lawnmowers.

The electric Flymo Turbo is made with a lightweight design that "… Read more
