Apple published an updated chart on its developer Web site for the iOS App Store, which shows that iOS 7 is now on 74 percent of all iOS devices. This means adoption of the operating system has grown 10 percent since numbers last reported in October.
A free app in the App Store called Seene will help you create 3D photo scenes, using your iPhone's camera. The process is simple, requiring nothing more than a subject that stays still and a steady hand.
Upon downloading Seene from the App Store, you're guided through the creation process. Basically, you need to find a subject that will stay still long enough for you to see lots of the little green dots used by Seene to map out an object.
From there you press the shutter release and move your phone -- not just rotate it -- … Read more
Apple's Siri possesses many skills, but subtraction doesn't seem to be one of them.
Asking Siri "What's 3.23 minus 1.27?" resulted in an odd answer. Instead of responding with the correct value, Apple's voice assistant told me the current date. I tried again and got the same response. Delving further, I asked Siri to subtract a variety of other numbers with decimal points, such as "4.23 minus 1.27," "8.12 minus 3.23," "6.43 minus 2.41," and "5.25 minus 4.… Read more
As 2013 draws to a close, Tim Cook has to be smiling.
Earlier this year it seemed that Apple would take a fall. Samsung and rest of the Android players were gaining momentum and share as Apple was slow to update its product portfolio and was seeing its profit margins decline. The stock went from from above $700 in September 2012 to below $400 in July 2013. Following the fall introduction of new products and good sales numbers for the holiday shopping season, however, the stock has climbed back above $560.
Perhaps Cook has been smiling all year, knowing that … Read more
You may one day be able to chat with your iPhone or iPad docking station courtesy of Apple's Siri.
A patent application -- dubbed "Smart dock for activating a voice recognition mode of a portable electronic device" and published Thursday by the US Patent and Trademark Office -- scopes out plans for a dock a bit more advanced than today's models.
Key to the new dock would be integration with Siri. Rather than including Apple's voice assistant, the dock would tap into Siri on your mobile device. You'd activate Siri simply by speaking or … Read more
Apple could add as many as 17 million iPhones to its 2014 sales tally in a reported deal with China Mobile, said Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster
The two companies have signed an agreement, the Wall Street Journal said on Wednesday, citing a "person familiar with the situation." The source told the Journal that -- after months of speculation and anticipation -- the iPhone is expected to roll out through China Mobile on December 18 to the carrier's 760 million subscribers.
If the December date is accurate, the 17 million in sales predicted by Munster would raise … Read more
While President Obama uses Apple's iPad, he admitted Wednesday that unspecified security concerns prevent him from using an iPhone.
"I'm not allowed for security reasons to have an iPhone," Obama said during a meeting promoting his health care law with young people Wednesday at the White House. However, he said his daughters, Sasha and Malia, spend a lot of time on their iPhones.
An enthusiastic e-mailer-in-chief, Obama fought hard to keep his BlackBerry after his inauguration in 2009. (By comparison, George W. Bush stopped using e-mail in 2001, and Bill Clinton sent only two e-mails during … Read more
The Xbox 360 was released in the fall of 2005 and the PlayStation 3 a year later. Back then smartphones weren't all that smart, the mobile market was dominated by players like BlackBerry and Nokia, and gaming was split between consoles and PCs.
Everything changed, however, when Apple released the iPhone; and once again with the release of the iPad. The mobile revolution has changed the way we share, consume media, and play games. You would be hard-pressed to find someone without a cell phone these days, let alone a smartphone.
To take advantage of the increased adoption rate … Read more
I'm almost exclusively a Johnny Mathis and Bing Crosby guy when it comes to holiday music, but if your tastes are more eclectic than mine, you may enjoy Apple's holiday gift of a free, eight-song playlist.
You'll find Apple's offer in the Apple Store app -- not to be confused with the App Store -- for the iPhone (but, oddly, not in the Apple Store iPad app.) From the Holiday tab, scroll down to the Holiday Cheer menu item. Tap on it and then tap the Download button, at which point you'll get kicked over … Read more
I want my iPhone contacts list to contain only phone contacts. I need neither Facebook friends nor e-mail contacts included. And with iOS 7, there is an easy way to hide e-mail contacts from your contacts list.
I previously covered how to remove Facebook friends from your contacts list, and that process remains the same for iOS 7. For e-mail contacts, however, there is a faster and easier way than going into Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars and then toggling off Contacts for each e-mail account.
With iOS 7, it creates a group for each e-mail account. This means that … Read more
